Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi OVA. This title is probably familiar to many of you, especially if you have read some of my posts in the last six months. I just would not shut up about it. This yuri anime is finally released yesterday. Thus, with much excitement, I watched it the first chance I had.

And I am absolutely dizzy with love for it!

The story focuses on the relationship between Mai and Reo. It builds the entire OVA on one chapter of the visual novel. Reo is sick, so Mai stays over to nurse her back to health; though they are constantly distracted by each other’s passion. Admittedly, this plot is really weak. Even with bits of flash back, we get so little information on the backgrounds of the characters or the world of Sono Hanabira. The audience is thrown between the girls and left to pick up from there. The nonlinear (and nonexistent) plot just adds even more confusion.

However, what Anata to Koibito Tsunagi lacks in plot, it makes up for in its personality and relationship developments. Although it has little story, the anime really portrays the gist of the visual novel with a single chapter. Right away, we get a clear sense of the romantic love between Mai and Reo, and just how much they care for each other. Mai’s bathing Reo, helping her change, and other interactions all add so much to that. The flashback confession is also such a kyaa~ moment!

Furthermore, both Reo and Mai’s personalities are really well developed. Even without a strong story, Reo’s fear of being left alone just shines through her every little reaction to Mai’s words and actions. For example, the uncertainty Reo feels is beautifully simply and effectively portrayed when she pulls on Mai’s sleeves to stop Mai from leaving even for a short while.

Similarly, Mai’s personality is also strongly illustrated. It is clear how kind she is to Reo, but the anime commits to also showing her pushy confidence. I really loved the various ecchi scenes when Mai teases and forcefully convinces Reo to give in to her desires.

These details of personality are complemented by the beautiful animation. As I mentioned before, the animation is something I looked really forward to. The anime does not disappoint. Frame by frame, the work is just pristine. The way the contours of the body respond to touch and pressure is gorgeously done. Their expressions are so dynamic as well, making this such a pleasure to watch.

However, perhaps due to a directionless story, the transitions between scenes sometimes feel choppy. Certain cuts between the ecchi scenes are especially rough, jumping from one position to another awkwardly without showing the intermediate movements. Still it is something I can forgive, especially because of how tasteful the sex scenes are done.
This is perhaps my favorite aspect of Anata to Koibito Tsunagi: how elegant the anime felt. It was not as ecchi as I expected at all. (Of course you probably still would not want to watch this with your parents or young children.) I really appreciated that it is not just a lot of pounding away at each other’s genitals.

The ecchi scenes emphasize a lot of gentle touches and kisses. There are lots of cuddling, nibbling, licking, and kissing on the lips, necks, and collarbones. These intimate contacts have a lot more sentimental connotations than just plain sex. This allows for more focus on their love for each other rather than raw lust. Moreover, it keeps the anime really classy and gives fluffy atmosphere. Furthermore, actual insertions are tastefully subtle. When the anime does show the more naughty parts, it is with the backdrop of really sweet emotions. The OVA manages to be extremely poignant as well as sensual. This balance is just so delicious.

I really enjoyed watching Anata to Koibito Tsunagi. I would have liked to see more of the game incorporated, but at the same time, I loved how much detail is given to that single act and to the characters. From the choice of lines to the way the ecchi scenes are animated, everything pays attention to the most important thing, Mai and Reo’s love for each other.

*Someone made a really good point in the comments that perhaps this anime is best viewed as a side story add-on to the games rather than an adaptation or retelling. I agree with that.

Where did you watch it from? =)

    • Yi says:

I have linked the download for a subbed version here.

English subbed Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi anime download: *dead*

Check out this comment instead: http://goo.gl/FF7Cb

      • Jayz says:

Wait, so where are the subtitles?

        • Yi says:

The first one should be a .mkv video that’s subbed. The second link (hotfile) might not be. Oops… Might have accidentally uploaded the raw. But Megaupload one should be the subbed anime.

        • Jayz says:

I’m not seeing any subtitles D:

        • Yi says:

Did you dl the one from Megaupload?
It should just be a .mkv video and play with subtitles. You might need some sort of codec to get the subtitles to work, but I’m not sure what you need exactly.
          It plays on mine.

Good luck getting it to work.

      • zjg10 says:

dot have any thing that plays mkv (what does that stand for anyways) what do i do

        • Yi says:

Try using VLC player. You can find it via google. Also, you might need certain codecs like CCCP. So yea. Hope things work out for you. ^ ^

  6. Holy jeez! The subtitled version came so fast! I did see it raw and it was very cute. Though since I didn’t understand most of it, I kinda skipped parts of it… If you know what I mean ^^;

From what I saw in the raw, I pretty much agree with your review except for the story part. I’ll be watching it again right after this. I really like how Reo is almost like one of Kugimiya’s tsundere. So cute!

    • Yi says:

Reo is such a tsundere! She’s so adorable.

Anyways, the story is really pretty slim, but everything else is just lovely. Let me know what you think after the subs.

      • The story is indeed very slim. I was really craving more! And it really is such a short, short runtime at 22 minutes. I’m sure they could’ve done more backstory and make a full 30 minutes at least. The last part is really cute how Mai asked that Reo would only stay by her side just until she gets better and no more after that. I think I was grinning ear to ear with how cute the story was ^_____^

And yes, Reo was uber adorably cute! The shape of her mouth, the pouty lips I guess, was so cute I can’t help but stare just at her mouth, lol.

        • Yi says:

It really needed something more on the characters’ backgrounds. I wanted to see Reo’s parents situation at home. The reasons behind her fears of loneliness. I wanted to get some insight into Mai’s roles as a big sister. And I wanted to see the school where everything happens.

I guess they simply didn’t have enough time to expand.

          Reo is super cute!

  7. AXYPB says:

Do you suppose this is a pilot for a series that will cover the rest of the game? Given the success and reviews it’s been getting, if there were plans to continue this, they seem likely to continue.

    • Yi says:

By itself, the story is just way too awkward. It doesn’t feel like it has a beginning or an end. It would make much more sense if this was a pilot.

It’s certainly really successful so I can see them coming out with another one. It could be a remake, a sequel, a continuation, or on another couple. After all, I doubt chuchu was established to produce a single OVA.

  8. ZeroQ says:

It was definitely good, very cute and romantic. It’s just too bad the writers decided to be “creative” and virtually ignore the original storyline.

Although the series itself is somewhat lacking in the plot department, they would have been able to get so much more out of the anime adaptation, had they stuck to the original script.

*additional generic, geek rant that nobody cares about*

    • Yi says:

It’s been a while since I actually played the third game… Two years maybe?

The gist is there, and I remember a subplot with Reo getting sick and such. I think the writers simply told the same story in a nonlinear way, and maybe with a different script. I didn’t particularly mind that too much, but I can understand if people wanted it to be closer to the original.

I was a bit disappointed, however, by how limited the OVA is. It chose to only show less than 1/4 of the game. Still, I think 24 minutes is simply not long enough.

Agreed that they might have done better with the original script. I was also kind of surprised that they made no mention of Reo’s situation at home. Her mother not being around and her wealth are two really fundamental things behind her motivations, and not having that makes it kind of awkward. Stuff like this is a pretty big dent against the anime.

I really wonder what I would’ve thought of this if I hadn’t played the game, and if I would be less forgiving.

      • Swordwind says:

Actually, as I recall, this is an original plot. Mai got sick in the game, and Reo dropped by to give her some medicine, prior to her confession. There was nothing quite so…overt.

  9. JDMakoto says:

I agree the details in both animation and personalities were indeed fascinating…
Also, I may be wrong, but I think I’ve read there is a second part, although I can’t remember where, does it sounds familiar to you? I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m subconsciously altering my memory though….

I’m also looking desperately for the ending OST (the piano theme), which by the way was astonishing, I hope I’ll find it soon….listening to the version I recorded from the OVA with a random sound recorder is quite pathetic hahaha…No, but seriously, it’s really inspiring.

Once again, thank you for your time, and congratulations, great review!
    Best Regards

    • Yi says:

Really? I haven’t heard anything about a second part or another OVA. Although I’m fairly confident another anime will eventually be released, I don’t think there’s been any official confirmations.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Agreed about the piano theme. I really liked the music as well. It fits the rosy delicate feel of the anime. It’s light, elegant, and very pretty.

Anyways, thanks for the nice words. I’m glad you like the review. ^ ^

  10. Shin says:

I am so ashamed to have fapped to this. Oh god.

  11. Valence says:

Hey hey, thanks for introducing this series to us. Gonna watch it soon, I do hope it’s as good as you say it is 😀

    Fingers crossed.

  12. Tiffy Tran says:

All I can really think up right now after watching this is: really intense and really cute lol. I think I need to go sit in front of the fan for a little bit now haha.

  13. hisui19 says:

uwahhhh!!! sh*t!!! thanks for the link and your post! i got a major nosebleed!!! >_< i hope i can put it in my iPod!!! thanks so much! now i'm waiting for your another post! the illustration book, i'm waiting for it badly too XD too much happiness, can't get up!!!!

    • Yi says:

The artbook post probably won’t come for a while. I usually do all my purchases in store, and the only times I get to go to anime stores is on vacations. So yea…

      Still, so much happiness indeed!!

  14. hisui19 says:

    PS.

“it is not just a lot of pounding away at each other’s genitals.”

    i lol’ed this XD

  15. Pingback: Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo: Anata to Koibito OVA 01 review « Ambivalence , or is it ambiguity?

  16. phro says:

WHY IS IT SO SHORT? Yi…. make it the anime longer!

    • phro says:

wow my grammar just died. That goes to show how hyped up I was after watching that Anime.

      • Swordwind says:

Grammar death is a common side-effect of viewing this OVA. I’ll go ahead and write you a prescription for a sedative, which will, ironically, probably make your grammar slightly worse.

    • Yi says:

If it were up to me, I’d make this a 12 episode series. Then proceed to do another one featuring Erisu and Shizuku. Then two more series on Nanami x Yuuna and Takako x Runa. Finally, I’d top it off with one on Kaede x Sara.

  17. Smithy says:

Thanks for the heads up, grabbed it and watched it as soon as I saw your post and indeed the OVA doesn’t disappoint!

Do feel that indeed viewers not familiar with the Hanabira lore will have a hard time following as they’re pretty much thrown into the middle of things. Most scenes, especially face close-ups were superbly well done, though did notice some rough frames in other scenes.

Nonetheless, brilliant OVA, hope to see more of these in the near future.

    • Yi says:

I think my opinion of this would probably have been pretty low if I came into this with fresh eyes. The scenes are superbly done and the details of their emotions beautifully presented. However, I don’t think it’s backed up by a well developed world. The animation is amazing to look at. The transitions of certain parts are rough though.

Overall, certainly not a disappointment. It actually excelled for an h-anime, which is usually marked by low quality animations. Still, there are rooms for improvement.

I really look forward to another one soon.

  18. UnchainedMelody says:

I must say that it feel short of my expectations. I expected some sort of coherent plot line, perhaps even an alternate telling of the VN. So I was a little disappointed after watching it the first time through. I also watched it without English subtitles so much of the dialouge’s meaning was lost to me as well as those small subtle things you can only get from understanding everything.

That being said I still enjoyed it. It was sweet and even though, as you’ve mentioned, the transition between scenes can be choppy at times, it still managed to flow well. The ecchi parts were tastefully done and fit in with the entire mood of it all. Even with the different voice actors, you still got a sense of Reo and Mai, though key components such as their background and situation at school aren’t mentioned.

I see this more as a supplement to the VN and etc than something separate. To really know it, you really need to have played the games or gotten some sense of the plot outside of this anime.

I’m not good with terminology but that art is one of my most favourite parts. The music, however, annoyed the hell out of me. It rose and fell oddly and was -too- light for my tastes. But once again, it fit in with the whole feel of it.

    • Swordwind says:

You thought the plot was weak after you watched it the first time, in a language you didn’t understand? I think that’s worthy of a giggle.

    • Yi says:

I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the subtitles either…

I’ve said quite a lot already about the plot, most of it is negative. It’s just too little and too incoherent. I was satisfied, however, with how the personalities came out though, so that’s good.

Perhaps it is best to look at this as a supplement to the VN, kind of like the light novels. Actually, that makes a lot more sense considering the story is not in the games at all. It could’ve been something that happened after the events in the visual novel.

I actually liked the music. I thought it fitted the theme pretty well. And the character designs are gorgeous. Reo and Mai are just too cute!!

  20. Swordwind says:

It was nice. I think it’s silly to expect a coherent, original, and innovative plot in a twenty minute special that also happens to be chuchu’s first release. It was pretty & cute, and that’s probably enough. And if you don’t consider the first scene too much, the plot was pretty sensible.

In short, I didn’t have any problems with it. On the contrary, I liked it; I hope there will be more.

    • Yi says:

I agree. I didn’t expect a masterpiece or anything. I think that’s why I was a lot more forgiving of its flaws.

And it does what it sets out to do beautifully. It’s adorable, sensual, and emotional.

  21. Shinra says:

Yup!!! I just watch it too ^^ WAS TOTALLY AWESOME!!! XDDD

Too Awesome till I watched it twice. Xd The Graphics n Movenments is wayyy too Smooth!! Really worth my 4 HOUR download time ^^

Im having high hopes for Other Hanabira OVAs… if there really is a planning on making 1 XD

    • Yi says:

I watched it twice too. Once with raws then with subtitles, and it was amazing both times. Simply an incredible experience.

I’m looking forward to more too and I hope they are planning more.

  22. ZT says:

THAT. WAS. AWESOME! They really done a nice job with the animation. I agree that the plot is a bit lacking, but to be fair 20 minutes is an awfully short amount of time to cram. Anyways, now, I keep my fingers and toes crossed for more Hanabira OVAs.

    • Yi says:

Yea, this needs to be expanded to standalone. Otherwise, it feels more like an add-on / side story rather than a adaptation.

  23. Zemial99 says:

I certainly agree with the review a lot. (I watched the Raw version the whole way, and I absolutely loved every bit of it). Though, it had a bit of humor on some parts.

Also, the OVA got me wrong on one thing, the sex scenes. Cause when I looked at the trailer, I thought it only have one, but I didn’t notice that it have 2. Both are cute though.

I hope that the second OVA comes out.

    • Yi says:

I was actually expecting like 3 or 4 for this and it only had 2. It’s surprising how short 20 minutes really is.

Cheers to a potential second one.

  24. Sion says:

Thanks for providing the link for us to watch it english subbed, Yi.

The OVA definitely met my expectations, plus the art was great IMO. I’ll agree that the story was a bit slim, but I’m sooo biased towards sono hanabira that I didn’t seem to mind. Not to mention it felt so fluffy and loving that it was a nice change from all of the other things I’ve seen =\.

A 2nd sono hanabira OVA would be great, since this one felt a bit short. Again, thanks for the review. twas solid and left me with a little more to think about, haha.

    • Yi says:

Same here. Despite all the things that could’ve been better, I absolutely loved this OVA. My judgment is very much influenced by all the surrounding works.

And it did do a very good job in presenting such a cute fluffy sweet romance.

Glad you liked the review. And a second OVA would be so great.

  25. PhantomPhreek says:

Certainly, there wasn’t much of a plot. Then again, how much could you shove in to a 30mins episode, what covered all that up was the elegantly and carefully done sex scenes and the strong character development blowing the whole damn thing right out of the water.

As expected, Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo has now officially become the very definition of Yuri in my Yuriverse….the benchmark by which I shall judge all other anime to oblivion!

Yi, what’s your rating outta’ 10?

    • Yi says:

The sex scenes and the little emotional details really made up for the lack of plot.

Sono Hanabira has also become the queen of yuri for me. It is certainly the best in the visual novel department, and depending on whether more OVA will be released, it might even surpass Shoujo Sect in yuri anime for me.

As for rating out of 10.
Relative to all the other anime (both ecchi and regular), I would give it a 7/10.
If I were not such a rabid fan of yuri and if I had no idea what Sono Hanabira is, I would guess I’d give it a 5/10.

Now, in terms of enjoyment, it’s probably a 9/10.

p.s. Just to give a sense of my ratings relative to other anime, here’s my MAL list: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/yihsieh

If I remember correctly, I also gave Shoujo Sect a 7/10. Now that I’ve calmed down from the initial excitement, I have to admit that I think Innocent Lovers as an anime series is better than this single OVA. But this may change if more Hanabira comes out in the future.

  26. Seph says:

One word: brilliant^^ It was worth waiting for so long to watch this OVA. Thank you for the link Yi 🙂

  27. Lark says:

Certainly surprised me. I never knew it would be this lovely xD;; Kind of scary. Way beyond my expectations. I understood the RAw well. Pretty obvious to me…

trying to find a subbed AVI or some other format besides MKV.

    • Yi says:

      Haha scary huh?

Someone else mentioned a need for .avi in another thread. I can’t help with that. But my personal recommendation would be to try to get .mkv to work. It’s so much more convenient in the long run if you watch fansub anime often.

I use VLC with CCCP codec. It hasn’t really given me problems ever.

  28. I MUST WATCH IT NOW!!
    *goes download it* :3

thanks for the reminder about this.
im quite amazed at how the quality of the anime is..

  29. Mira says:

Now if they made a drama CD for Takako/Runa and Eris/Shizuku – the Hanabira year for 2010 would be complete ^.^

    • Yi says:

Oh yea, they haven’t made one. That would be pretty cool. I’d rather they make another game for each pair first.

Anyways, I feel like Fuguriya has already gone above and beyond this year. It’s really all very exciting.

  30. I’d be humanly incapable of more excitement for an H OVA than I have for this.

    Love you, Yi~

Also I bought that Shimada Humikane artbook. Magnificent.

  31. Nopy says:

I watched the raw so I didn’t understand what they were saying, but it was easy to tell what was going on. Like you said, it really was elegant, I thought the making out scenes felt a bit like Aki Sora, except it’s yuri.

  32. hisui19 says:

yeah it’s not subbed… *cry* I’ve waited for it last night, so i just watched it raw… and it kind of disappointing, I’m hoping to see the whole story since i can’t play the game… but it’d take my breath away (i forgot to breathe)… so I’m going to ask two questions: can i have the subbed version on .avi? and does sono hanabira have the ipod version of the game? i wanted to play it (badly)… i can’t play it in our computer since it’s in living room… -_-” BTW thanks so much again!!! >_<

    • Yi says:

Someone else also asked for a .avi version, so if anyone knows about file conversion, please help!

On the other hand, there should be ways to get .mkv to play.
      I use this: http://www.cccp-project.net/

As for an ipod version of the game… I don’t think so. I could be wrong though.

The subbed version in .mkv is in the second comment.

      • hisui19 says:

the thing with .mkv is when I convert it, it turns out in a raw (no subtitles) so I always find .avi… what’s with .mkv anyways? it is not compatible with the standard video player, so they should use .avi…

        • AXYPB says:

MKV has many advantages over AVI on the technical side that they are trying to have it succeed it. The most important difference other than supporting streams other than audio and video is that MKV uses much less overhead than AVI, so a video stream in an MKV will generally have much better quality than an AVI of the same size. Any competent encoding program should have an option to render a subtitle stream in an MKV into AVI output. What encoder are you using?

  33. hisui19 says:

gotdamm*t! so it only has one? no more??! i only realized it now (after reading the comments) *cry*
@lightningsabre: many of my classmates said she looks like Taiga(Toradora) and yeah I think so too ^_^ love Rie Kugimiya…
I always love Tsunderes, so the first time i saw them i fell in love in their pairing XD
These two are the only ones i like in the entire Sono Hanabira series, I’m thankful it’s them in the OVA XD *grin*

    • Yi says:

These are the only ones you like? I actually really all of the couples. Some more than others (like this one), but I like them all.

      • hisui19 says:

well, i just encounter it in an forum which a user is using it as his/her signature, i think “it was cute!” so I grabbed it…
and i don’t even know what the whole title is when i search it, all i know is it’s image name “sonohana” i thought it was their name at first eheheheh, like they combine it or somewhat… because I’m really curious about it, I’m confident to find it XD and here I am…. I’m just disappointed that it was a game not an anime… I can’t really play the game!!! *cry*

        • Yi says:

Wait a while. More are going to be translated eventually.

        • hisui19 says:

even if it is translated, I can’t play the game…
our computer is in the living room…
          I’m waiting to have a laptop ^_^

        • Yi says:

Icic. That’d certainly be awkward if you got caught by someone playing it.

        • hisui19 says:

yeah, that would felt really embarrassing! XD
and I’m all nervous the entire time I’m playing it
          that’s no fun so, no thanks… ^_^

      • Yi says:

I hope you get a chance to play it soon. ^ ^

  34. hisui19 says:

oh yeah, (sorry for the third time post) do you guys know where to get Hanabiras pictures? i lost my files because of reformatting so I lost Sono Hanabira too…

  35. BustRobot says:

Have to say I pretty much agree entirely with the review.

On the other hand, if you consider that this is something primarily aimed at fans of the VN, rather than newcomers to the story, then the lack of story makes sense. Besides that, since it’s only the one OVA, trying to shove the entire VN in wouldn’t work at all. Maybe if they had two or three eps to work with… but I digress.

I seem to recall Getchu! pre-sales lists showing it beating out Vol.1 of Angel Beats!, which is impressive. I think we can all agree that ChuChu has come out strong with their first product and they deserve a lot of credit; and personally, I’ve got high hopes for them in the future.

    • Yi says:

Yea. I think it’s best to consider this more as an add-on to the third game rather than an adaptation/ retelling of it.

Anyways, the pre-sales did amazing. It also beat out Bakemonogatari and others. This was a really strong first release by chuchu indeed. Plus, they seem to want to focus on yuri ecchi, which makes them so much more awesome!

  36. SparkyTheGryphon says:

You shouldn’t ever shut up about something Hanabira related. =D Just watched it this morning and loved every minute of it. ^^ But it was so shooort… It only felt ten minutes long. xP Seeing an animated Mai and Reo was fantastic. I’m with you, I really hope there’s more~

And I do agree about the transitions. One second they’re kissing and the next second, surprise, their clothes are gone. And the nearly nonexistent plot could definitely confuse someone who isn’t familiar with Hanabira 3. Two of the many reasons it probably shouldve been longer. But since it’s yuri, and since Mai and Reo are such an awesome couple, I’m quite willing to forgive the OVA for what it lacked. ;D

And like you said, the sex scenes were great. But it was really the cuddling, nibbling, etc. that made it so worth watching and did a great job of showing their relationship. It was super adorable; I kyaa’d internally.

Hm. Have I ever commented this much at once? Better get back to lurking~

    • Yi says:

After calming down since the initial excitement, I realize I was way to forgiving in my review. The transitions are choppy for sure, and the plot is just lacking. However, if we think of this as a side story targeted for those familiar with the Hanabira lore, it’s not too bad.

I really did enjoy this a lot. It did the most important things perfectly. And in terms of enjoyment level and kyaa~ moments, I think I gave it a fair review.

Haha, thanks for the well thought out comment. ^ ^

  37. ETERNAL says:

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a yuri ero anime. I’m curious about this one, though I’m considering playing the game first (IIRC one of them was translated).

    • Yi says:

I really enjoyed the visual novels, so I’d highly recommend them. As of right now, one of them is translated and some of the other ones are being worked on. The translated one doesn’t feature the same pair though.

  38. Dragon Of Hourai says:

    Yi!!! it’s terrible!!
our Votes for the English Patch for Hanabira 8 got cut down ;_; we are still leading but it’s not fare *sobs* (Jk) we had almost 600 Votes the last time i checked now we are in the 270’s again! D:<
    heres the link: http://www.makimakimanga.com/index.php
    Vote People Vote!!

    • Zeffy101 says:

He he, yea i voted for “Sono Hanabira 8 English patch” as well!!! I’m sure its bound to have heaps of votes. Reason it got taken down was because that site got suspended again or taken down. I checked it a few days ago and it said that “it no longer works” and now it does.. i feel sorry for “Ris” (Manager or Admin of MakiMaki) with the site. Its been going up and down lately. 😦

But on topic now.. i reckon this OVA was good / bad, i mean it had its up’s and down’s like the script wasn’t up to its satisfaction since it was missing some of the Visual Novel dialogue, however when you read Manga its not really exactly the same as the Anime, so i guess it felt similar to that. The plot seemed choppy sort of.. like for instance… at the start with the intro scene with them kissing it was.. (unexpected) normally you’d have some OP or so to an Anime series … but it worked with the flow i guess. However this is stated as an “OVA” i dunno.. if episode’s/OVA’s in Anime are similar but anyway.. lol But on the bright side.. we got to see some hot Yuri scenes with Mai/Reo right? when i watched, it was cute when Reo had the cold first then Mai got it from her lol ha ha. Anyway.. and yes it was kinda short… but aren’t OVA’s normally like that? if you think about it and watched previous Anime OVA’s they were short?.. unless if I’m thinking about “Specials” then.. >.< forgive me, correct me if I'm wrong sorry. But yes, overall. This Anime series is bound to have more, i have high hopes for it! 😀 but… its gonna be so….. long till we see another brand new OVA so.. yea.. a game of patients is waiting a head of us.

Thank you very much Yi for hosting this up here.. i never would of found this wonderful site with this here! Also I'm looking forward to those "English Patches" for the rest of the Hanabira VN (Visual Novel)!! iv been waiting for those to be translated 😛 Anyway, sorry if iv confused anyone.. this is my opinion, and thanks for making this site cheers guys… and girls 🙂

      • Dragon Of Hourai says:

        wow that was a long reply 😮 . . .

      • Yi says:

I agree. The plot was not only skimpy, but also lacked flow.
I think OVA has a very loose definition. The difference between it and episodes is ambiguous. I’ve seen some OVA that are more like specials, and some OVA that are actually a mini series. Some are 20-30 minutes. Others are 45-60 minutes. There’s no set standard. It’s just a label anyways.

Also, thanks for the long comment. I really appreciate that! It’s nice to hear others’ thoughts on something I also have strong opinions on.

Maki Maki is taking on a lot of projects. While I’d love to see Sono Hanabira 8 translated (I voted for that), some of the other options are also wonderful. It’s also important to respect what the regular visitors there want too.

Anyways, it’s a bit unfortunate the site host is unstable right now. 😦 Hope it comes back online soon.

        • Dragon Of Hourai says:

“It’s also important to respect what the regular visitors there want too.”

Ack! i didn’t rly look at it that way 😮 but at any rate ill be sure to remeber that ^^

        • Yi says:

It does look like most visitors there want Hanabira 8 translated anyways. I actually visit there somewhat often for Girl Friends. I think a few days after the poll first came up, Hanabira 8 took the lead.

    • Johnny says:

      I’ve just voted ! 🙂
It will take the time it will take, but i’ll play them all ((i’ve only played first one)

  39. Tsuki says:

    I had heard that there were 2 parts to this, is there only 1? ‘.’;;;

    • Yi says:

I haven’t heard of that. It would be great if that’s confirmed. Do you remember the source?

      • Tsuki says:

I think I read it on more than 1 site, but the one that I just looked up to remember right now is here: http://akisoraa.blogspot.com/2010/06/sono-hanabira-ni-kuchizuke-wo-anata-to.html

The last paragraph says that it’s a 2 episode OVA… I had originally downloaded the RAW on the 30th, but I can’t seem to find the 2nd episode… if there is one…

        • Yi says:

I read this post. The post actually reviewed two different things. The first one is the Sono Hanabira OVA. The second one is a 2 episode OVA called Maze Bakunetsujiku. The last paragraph refers to that, not Sono Hanabira.

I’m fairly certain that as of now, there is no 2nd episode of the Hanabira anime, nor is there any official announcements of another episode.

        • Tsuki says:

I see I see, thank you for letting me know, I was very confused on that matter ^^

      • Tsuki says:

Actually, I found another one: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=250968&show=20

On post #22, they say this, “Let’s see how 2 ep turns out to be.”
On post #24, they say this, “can’t wait to the second OVA”
On post #26, they say this, “looking forward to the next episode.”
and post #27, “while im anticipating the next ep…”

        • AXYPB says:

I don’t know where they’re getting that from. I have an ISO of it and there’s only one episode. The official page doesn’t lend any credence to these hopes either.

        • Yi says:

I think people may just be assuming that there will be another one. It’s a safe assumption, but as far as official news goes, no 2nd episode released or even planned yet.

  40. AXYPB says:

The drama CD that came with first-print preorders is a single 11-minute track performed by the voice actresses in this OVA. I’ve uploaded it for completeness. I don’t know anything else about it.

  42. Patchouli says:

I admit I am a bit scared to watch a hentai (as it will be my first), plus the only yuri I’ve ever read is Kashimashi, but because of this review and some other reviews I’ve seen, I am really willing to give this a shot! It looks very good and (said by many other reviewers) excel where many hentais fail. Plus I really like animes with likeable characters withgood development .

Just a question though, do you kn ow the voice actresses? Both seem really familiar, and Reo’s voice strikes me as familiar. (It kind of sounds like Rie Kugimiya or Yukari Tamura.)

    • hisui19 says:

      nope… it’s not, i know Rie and Yukari’s voices well…
though Reo’s voice is so cute! ^_^
I want to know it too, who’re their seiyuus??

    • Yi says:

Same here. I’m not going to say I don’t watch hentai at all, but I’ve always been hesitant about watching them. Anyways, I think this is particularly nice because it’s so unique relative to all the other stuff out there. To date, I am only aware of two series that deals with pure yuri relationships. Further, Hanabira takes quite a different approach than the other (Shoujo Sect), and really carves out a place for itself.

Anyways, I’d like to know who the voice actresses are as well.

      • Johnny says:

Yeah, Hentai is full of things like porn movie, but sometimes H animes can be as good as standard animes…
H is probably the sort of animes about i’m the most selective.
Except “‘Aki Sora” (but it’s H without H, if u see what i mean), i only watch H-yuri animes (“Shoujo Sect”, some episodes of “Cream Lemon”, “Stainless Night” (it’s yuri/futanari+girls love) &… “Sono Hanabira” of course !
        GIRLSLOVE POWAAA !!!

        • Yi says:

Another endorsement for Aki Sora. Some people below also mentioned this anime saying that like Hanabira, this is an H without H. Maybe I should really check it out if only for the romantic aspects.

        • Johnny says:

There’s a difference between Hanabira & Aki Sora : for the former, there are pixels on… between the legs, not for Aki Sora, because “between the legs” are not shown at all.

        • Yi says:

All the more reason I should check out Aki Sora then. It seems like it’d be a far from being a raunchy thing.

  43. RyanA says:

First, this looks like a brilliant combination of pretty, elegant, and sexy.

The ecchi scenes emphasize a lot of gentle touches and kisses. There are lots of cuddling, nibbling, licking, and kissing on the lips, necks, and collarbones

My god. Sounds like the sensuality is maxed out; awesome. What’s great is that this doesn’t come off “nasty” or “brute” … I like that.

  44. AS says:

I need to go find this and watch it lol. The only way I get updates about this is through you so thanks ^^. The art looks great.

  45. hisui19 says:

Yi-san…. the link you gave me, it’s Japanese and I can’t see the pictures…
do you know any other? sorry for disturbing… XD

  46. Zeffy101 says:

Um.. dumb question.. is ‘Listless Ink’ going to put up the Artwork? so.. we are able to download it? just curious.. it’s been about 5 days since the 30th July (also someone quoted well.. people quoted that its releasing on the 30th July) I’m not really 100% sure how long this takes to be up for sale or scanned to be downloaded. If anyone could let me know about the situation be much appreciated.

    Thanks! 🙂

    • Yi says:

I’m not going to be putting up the Artwork anytime soon because I don’t have the artbook on my hands yet. But if someone scans it and leaves a link in the comments, I’ll certainly put include it on the Hanabira page.

Anyways, it was released on 7/30, and how quickly images start appearing on the internet really varies from artbook to artbook.

  47. Well, color me impressed. I’d say you gave the OVA a fair hearing, fair enough that I actually went to check it out, and instead of something totally raunchy, there was actually a good splash of class sprinkled throughout it that I can say if they gave the characters more background and developed them better, this could end up being a very solid romance/drama.

    • Yi says:

Agreed. The audience really needed to come into this knowing who the characters are. I think the whole thing felt really random otherwise. Further, because the OVA offers so little about their lives outside these moments, it might even be hard for new people to get attached to the girls.

I really think I might have been too forgiving in the review. I should also mention that this is probably much better after having played the visual novel.

  48. FT says:

The OVA was great! nothing bad to say about it…as opposed to other OVAs this one lived up to my expectations *points to Suki desu Suzuki-kun and Kyou,Koi wo Hajimemasu OVAs*

BTW: great review! now waiting for Kuttsukiboshi(most probably the graphics won’t be as good as SonoHanabi’s but there will be more of a story) more Yuri is always appreciated ^_^

    • Yi says:

Yep yep. It was a nice short experience.
I totally forgot about Kuttsukiboshi. I know so little about that. The thing I know is that it is yuri. I’m excited to see it to find out more.

  49. Spiro says:

All in all, this is quite good but they seriously need to work on the plot or only those who play the game will know what is going on.That is probably the only thing I hate about this show : The lack of explainations of their past and the present.

    • Yi says:

Yea I feel the same. If you have not played the game, I’d imagine you’d come out feeling like a bit confused, and probably have little attachment to the characters. The OVA is best seen as a side story rather than an adaptation.

  50. theCorpsCommander says:

ohh, wow! Lesbian p0rn! gotta watch this now @ *site removed*! thanks!

  51. That was a great artical! then again not so hard when you have such a good anime to do it on

  52. hisui19 says:

@AXYPB: the site you gave me, it was so awesome! i think it might work on the internet in my school too ^_^ arigatou!!!
and for the .mkv, I understand now… but they should do an .avi too… so it’s fair… XD

oh and I’m still searching for an .avi, up until now… i haven’t watch it in subbed…
hope i can find it soon…

  53. Izzy says:

oh boooo, I don’t have any subtitles, does anyone know how to make it work?

    • Yi says:

Did you dl the .mkv file?
If you did, you might need some sort of codec to get it to work. Not something I know too much about; maybe someone else can jump in here and help.

  54. cha says:

reo x mai, kyaaaaaaaaaaaa, i’m crazy of this couple, btw Yi do u know any web novel for this series, cuz there is web novel of sono hanabira 7, but i cant find this one, ty

    • Yi says:

I think there’s a Reo x Mai Diaries, which is a series of web episodes. There might also be a web novel, but I’d have to look around.

  55. AXYPB says:

SHiN-gx released their translation of the OVA in ten languages. If that isn’t dedication, I don’t know what is.

    • Yi says:

SHiN-gx is on the forefront of subbing yuri material. I love their works on Candy Boy and others.

Thanks for the link. ^ ^

  56. pat says:

I never seen this anime before, I like yuri anime.
I think this anime is beautiful characters.

  57. Dances/Chorus says:

My. They’re even making an anime. I wasn’t aware Hanabira had such a big fanbase.

    • AXYPB says:

It’s already out. I have yet to actually find another fan in person, although I do have friends who have.

    • Yi says:

The fan base is fairly big, but I don’t think it approaches the level of other doujin soft companies (ie. Nitro+, Type Moon, 07th Expansion, or Touhou). It’s gaining momentum though.

I haven’t met another fan in person either, but I also don’t try to meet anime fans irl in general.

  58. Izzy says:

heyy is there like going to be a part two
or is this the only part of the anime there is/ is gonna be?
because I absolutely loved it xD

    • Yi says:

None has been announced, but we can always cross our fingers and hope for more in the future.

Personally, I think it’s very likely another one will be released. We will just have to wait.

      • Izzy says:

awh, well that’s a bummer, but I see a lot of people like the anime and the game
so I’m guessing that the odds of a new one coming out aren’t exactly small
        xD
        thanks ❤ ^^

        • Yi says:

There are still plenty of related releases. Fuguriya has been very busy recently with the games and the light novels especially.

  59. Enigmatic Paradox says:

Well it’s happened again… I follow some random links, download an interesting looking few files and within all of about 2 hours I’m finding myself hooked once again on the work of the Japanese…

I’m curious though… as much as i would love to get into this series which until today I’d never even heard of, I do not speak a word of Japanese… so would it likely be faster for me to patiently wait for more translations or self-teach myself Japanese?… I hold nothing but respect and admiration for the individuals using up their own time translating works such as this but I also know such tasks take a lot of time in general.

Really, it seems like all the things i see now on the internet are subtly telling me in one way or another that i need to learn Japanese anyway.

    • Yi says:

I think it’s always good to learn Japanese or another language. It won’t be a waste even if you don’t end up playing the games.

      As for waiting on translations…
It’d take a bit of time before one learns enough to play through a visual novel. The anime has already been translated. The games, however, have not all been. Only the first one has a completed translation. It shouldn’t be too long before some more are done though.

Check the index page for updates on those:

Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo | A Kiss for the Petals Series

“Really, it seems like all the things i see now on the internet are subtly telling me in one way or another that i need to learn Japanese anyway.”
Haha, if you like anime and stuff, that might be a good idea. ^ ^

  60. StayCold says:

Reo is almost making the Hanabira games and the anime loli ^^. Although Runa officially made it partially loli.

  61. slayer says:

hey, have any English Patch for Sono Hanabira ni Kuchiduke wo Anata to Koibito Tsunagi Game..?

and the walkthrough too…..i wanna know how the good scene like…..
    please give me this 2….!!! Yi-san ^^

    • Yi says:

Only the first game has an English patch. You’re going to have to wait on it for this. As for a walkthrough, the game is pretty straightforward. You should have no problem getting all the CGs.

  62. Ichigo says:

    is there an ova 2?

    • AXYPB says:

I want to know where people are hearing of rumors of a second OVA because nothing in any official material ever even hinted at a sequel.

      • Yi says:

Me too… I haven’t heard anything at all. One curious thing though is that myanimelist.net has it listed as “currently airing” with undetermined number of episodes. Then again, MAL is mostly updated by other users with incomplete information.

Is there gonna be a part 2 or is this the only part?

I owuldd really love to know where ot get the game and I was wondering, What the game is like? More backstory? More details and the sensational love scenes in the show, are they also in the game?

  65. Jacob Williams says:

love the show im a fan of most anime but my FAVORITE anime are love/romance so if anyone has any good suggestions i would be happy to ablidge 🙂

    • Yi says:

My immediate recommendation and the closest thing I could think of to this would be Shoujo Sect.
Aoi Hana is another yuri anime that I think is really sweet, but it’s not 18+.

For other ecchi anime not necessarily yuri but in the same vein, Johnny and EmperorG below both have pretty good recommendations.

Some other romance anime that I really enjoy are Kimi ni Todoke, which I’m watching right now, and Nodame Cantabile. Neither are yuri or adult, but both are pretty good.

      Hope that helps.

  66. UNIT0918 says:

Very nice review. You share my taste in, well, tasteful ecchi. By any chance, do you have any recommendations on other tasteful ecchi anime?

    • Yi says:

As Johnny and EmperorG have both said below, Shoujo Sect would probably be the closest thing I can think of to this anime.

As for other tasteful ecchi anime… I’m not too versed in this, but Johnny and EmperorG below both have some recommendations.

  67. Johnny says:

I would recommend u “Shoujo Sect”, “Aki Sora OVAs” (despite its immoral content), but that’s all.
    Maybe “Stainless Night” (futanari/yuri) too.

    • EmperorG says:

No dood. No. Do not lower yourself to watching Aki Sora, only if you’re extremely desperate and bored.

Pure yuri H: Shoujo Sect and this one.
      Semi-pure H with some minor stuff to skip: G-Taste episodes 2, 3 and 5.
Futanari H that’s harmless and sweet for the most part: Stainless Night and Parade Parade.
Mixed H with some great yuri scenes: Slave Nurses, Nurse Me and Moonlight Lady, Another Lady Innocent, F3, Crimson Climax.

      There you go.

  68. Johnny says:

I’ve watched “Aki Sora” and found it nice. ^^

    • EmperorG says:

Oh yeah, I remember you. You’re the Aki Sora supporter. Well, you won’t change my mind on my hatred for it. If you liked it, that’s fine.

Anyway, patiently awaiting a possible 2nd OVA.

    • Yi says:

I’ve also seen Aki Sora actually. I remember seeing lots of recommendations for it some time ago. Then the chance came up when some friends wanted to watch an awkward anime to sort of “break the ice” in an online chat, and I somehow got involved.
The anime was OK I guess… It’s not horrendous but it’s not something I love either.

Sorry for the short answers but I’m pressed for time.

      No, no uncensored version anywhere.
No specific order for the Reo X Mai diaries necessary, but might as well go in order of release would be my suggestion.

  85. balticbard says:

Do you know anything about english patches for both the hanabira 8 and 6 games? I would like to buy the games but I don’t speak or understand Japanese which is a great disappointment on my part; I would like to have them read in English. You think there is even the slimmest chance of seeing those patches?

    • Yi says:

The patches are not out yet, but there is a high chance of seeing them in the future. Just check back once in a while to see if they’ve been completed.

  86. Myomyo says:

Is there anywhere else I can watch it since Megaupload got murdered ruthlessly by the government?

  87. i just wanted to warn you not to try and upload any more games onto megaupload because the US shut down that site and aal the things that you posted there are gone so you better chose your next site with care!!!

  88. Ayah Diamon says:

    Uhm…. Excuse me, but the link is kinda dead ; v ;

    C-can you guys upload a new one, please? ; ヮ ;

  89. Brian says:

Is there a link for the English subbed/dubbed (either is fine, but I prefer subbed) version of this, either streaming or for download?

    • Yi says:

There are links in the comment… Read the post some time. This is intended to be a review after all.

      • Brian says:

Sorry, I read over half the comments and didn’t find a link that wasn’t dead.

        • Brian says:

I googled it myself and found a subbed video after awhile. The OVA was great 🙂 I have a question about the game though, is it more of a VN than a game? When I try to search it, it shows scenes in the game, I want to know if you’re actually able to do anything in the game.

        • ray says:

Hey man i was wondering if you could tell me that site you found the video on and is it the full movie or just a couple of minutes? Being trying to find this dam show but no luck

        • Yi says:

It’s an OVA that spans about half an hour.

  90. YuriYuri says:

Is there possibly an uncencored ver?

  91. Mizuki says:

YES! I I’ve been looking for this OVA like a month now! I can now finish my quest and reap the benefits. Also, how is my English?

  92. Tyler B Miller says:

What is the different between the game and Ova

  93. Anonymous says:

can you please leave a download link

  94. Joshua Peli says:

That was a great OVA. I loved the fact you can see that we’re not just watching a sex scene, but a really lovable story. This OVA is surely one of the best, such as AKI & SORA. 😀

    • Yi says:

Glad you enjoyed it as well. Anyways, I’ve heard many good things about Aki Sora. Unfortunately, that’s not quite my thing. Cheers~

  95. anon says:

Thank you so much for the download! I am in your debt!

  96. Derp says:

    Download doesn’t work anymore 😦

  97. Sannin says:

Hey erh.. Would you know by any chance if there will ever be any more OVAs?

    • Zak in a Box says:

That question has been answered like fifty times… not even joking …

There’s no leads on a 2nd movie as of right now just the one .. then like a bunch of games and visual novels ..

Though a 2nd movie would have to be cuter than the first =w=
      … goodluck with that

      • Yi says:

Took the words right out of my mouth! Thanks Zak in a Box~ ^ ^

        • YuriFan300 says:

Awww! I already watched this OVA like a bunch of times! I would have liked to see more of Sono Hanabira anime with the other couples. Or they could even make a full on series featuring all the couples that are used today! That would make a good Sono Hanabira anime.

  98. YuriFan300 says:

Though, what I’d like to see most are either Shizuku and Eris or Takako and Runa. Those are my top favorite couples.

  99. Mayjaplaya says:

    Pretty spot-on review.

I watched this a coupla times after playing the 3rd and 5th VNs. I had this crushing, disappointed feeling that nothing happened in this OVA, that they just lay around, made out, and had sex the whole time with too little of the story actually being adapted in.

Then I downloaded the gif package for the OVA and after watching those I decided to give this OVA another chance.

For some reason the crushing empty feeling completely disappeared and was replaced with pure HNNNNNG. I think I focused more on the romance/intimacy element (which I now think is brilliant and incredibly adorable) and forgave the lack of story. I actually paused the video a ton of times to HNNNNNG. Now I want to rewatch this constantly, like how I feel with all the other translated Mai x Reo media. Mai x Reo best couple.

    • Yi says:

To be fair, for most the OVA, they did just lie around, make out, and have sex. However, it’s the story (despite being so small) underneath all that sex that makes it feel so intimate. The visual novels follow a similar approach, so if one can appreciate the VNs, one should enjoy this as well.

  100. DarkKirby says:

The link you posted for the download says it needs me to have an account and to do that it needs my credit card number. Do you know of any other sites that would have this anime?

  101. ferrari says:

2015 link died might need new uploads asap

  102. They ‘re released the OVA, for the first time, on Blu Ray.

  103. Rirma says:

Can’t you fox the link again?
