Sengoku Otome ~Momoiro Paradox~ Review

Sengoku Otome Momoiro Paradox Battle Girls characters

If you were to ask me in another year whether I had seen Sengoku Otome ~Momoiro Paradox~ (Battle Girls ~Time Paradox~), I would most likely say no. It is not that Sengoku Otome is a terrible anime—although it is certainly not good—the series is simply just so bland and so full of tiny flaws that the anime ends up in the weird lukewarm limbo between being hilariously bad and barely decent.

Sengoku Otome Momoiro Paradox Akechi Mitsuhide Oda Nobunaga Hideyoshi Date Masamune

Sengoku Otome follows the adventures of Hide Yoshino, a normal high school girl who has been spirited away to a past Sengoku Period, only that it is not really the era or the world we knew—women are the only sex in this universe. Hide Yoshino, through some odd twists and turns, acts as the “historical” figure, Hideyoshi, and assists the female Oda Nobunaga to collect pieces of the Crimson Armor, an armor rumored to allow its wearer to conquer all of Japan, from the other female warlords of this odd Sengoku Period.

Already inherent in this premise are several challenges. I have never been much of a fan of sex-bent retellings of history. Whenever a story involves significant historical characters and events, the past will come with its set of baggage, ideas, and connotations that must be addressed. Thus, without compelling reasons and explanation, most of these alternative historical stories tend to feel very lazy. That is exactly what we see with Sengoku Otome. While there are some loose interpretations of known events, for the most part, the characters’ only connections to our history are their names. The cast thus feels extremely awkward and their relationships shallow. This begs the question: Why not just tell an original story instead of unnecessarily forcing historical references down our throats?

Sengoku Otome Momoiro Paradox Hideyoshi history

Even more egregious are the thematic explanations for this parallel, exclusively-female universe. Sengoku Otome is a confusing and sloppy blend of half-ideas. The anime starts as a fantastical adventure; Hideyoshi is somehow transported into a past fantasy world. Though there are some interesting moments of Hideyoshi with her modern mindset in an olden time, the anachronism-driven scenes are quickly pushed into the background within an episode or two, and I find myself forgetting that Hideyoshi came from an alternate future. The story shifts completely to a fantasy setting, where the warlords scheme and battle with magical powers.

Sengoku Otome Date Masamune Battle Girls sci-fi

Furthermore, somewhere along the way, Sengoku Otome reveals that another character, Date Masamune, has come from our world along with Hideyoshi; she is, in fact, Hideyoshi’s teacher and the reason they are both in this world. This introduces yet another jarring sci-fi element to the world that never gets any explanation, along with a poorly developed side arc about Masamune’s lineage. Not content with the number of loose ends, Sengoku Otome threads the series with a talking dog, whose purpose is never given, and who ends the last scene with a huge question mark. This only makes the already hastily wrapped-up ending to Hide Yoshino’s minor detour to the past worse.

Sengoku Otome Hideyoshino ehehehe Battle Girls Momoiro Paradox

I left the series scratching my head and wondering if I somehow missed a few episodes that should have smoothed out the exposition, or whether there are more episodes. But no, Sengoku Otomoe really does have such terrible flow and focus, as if the writers each has an idea that has to be shoved into the story without any editing.

It is quite a shame because the series does have its upsides. The pace is decent, and the plot twists are interesting. Some of the characters are fun to watch, and many are lovable. (I especially love Tokunyan~) The anime also has fairly nice animation; it is nothing stellar, but some elements are fascinating enough: the textiles, the decorations… etc. Still, the positives are not enough to make the anime memorable.

Sengoku Otome Momoiro Paradox Battle Girls ending Oda Nobunaga Date Masamune Hideyoshino

True, there is yuri. And I do like yuri. However, the yuri in Sengoku Otome is mildly amusing at best, and slightly distasteful at worst. While it is admittedly fun to joke around with such blatant yuri fan service in Sengoku Otome, actually having to sit through it is not so exciting.

Then again, all the weaknesses are not so offending either that I hate this anime, and that is an issue. Sengoku Otome does not leave a strong impression at all—good or bad—except maybe a sense of just how unnecessary most of it feels: the historical references, the thematic elements, the side plots, and even many of the characters.

Unnecessary, it would seem, sums up this series quite well.

Notes:

  • While I rolled my eyes at most of the yuri moments, I did enjoy some of the cuter scenes.

  • As a fun aside, I actually had another review I have planned, but published this one today instead, because I am sure that in a few more months, even I would not remember what happens in Sengoku Otome.

  1. Ah right. I knew that I was forgetting something and thanks to this review, I just realized that I still haven’t finished this series, being one episode away! Yeah, I agree that it felt unnecessary (it did slip through my mind, after all!), but I still found the character interactions and the colors to be the better defining points of the series. ^_^

    • Yi says:

I was actually stalled on episode twelve for the longest time as well. After all, the main villain has been defeated at the end of 12 and things seem to have calmed down. It wasn’t until about a month later before I realized this anime has a 13 episode run. Haha.

Anyway, agreed about the colors for sure. I really enjoyed the bright and colorful armors, settings, and visuals. It’s a much needed pro of this anime.

  2. Overlord-G says:

Much better than my own review, mainly because I ignored the historical accuracy. I mean let’s face it, as soon as the concept of female depictions of legendary warriors was brought up, I threw any hope of accuracy and logic out the window and I’m sure glad I did. To be honest, the yuri, Nobunaga, Mitsuhide and our lovely purple magician (You’re right about forgetting).
Anyway, well done as usual mademoiselle.

    • Yi says:

      I remember your review. I think it’s lovely~ ^ ^

Anyway, I think I’ve mentioned my feelings about borrowing historical characters before. It’s not just that they’re female versions of historical characters, but also that there’s no reason for them to be. All it does is introduce an awkward feeling for those who do know the history.

The other thing is that a good anime (or movie, or book, or story) shouldn’t require as to throwaway our logic and brains to be able to enjoy it. It’s the same with Gosick’s inaccurate fashion. Sure, I can just ignore that part, but why should I have to? (Not to mention that it’s pretty hard to just shut off one’s brains and knowledge.) It’s up to the writers to avoid the inconsistencies, and not up to the audience.

I did enjoy Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Tokunyan though for what it’s worth.

      • Overlord-G says:

Ah, so in the end it all comes down to difference in pleasure. It all makes perfect sense now. Now I understand perfectly why you dislike shows that use this formula, because you respect the original source a lot and consider this show’s historic manipulation disgraceful. In short, you’re not a fan of female depictions of historic males at all.
I’m basically repeating what you said in your review. Silly me.

        • Yi says:

No, I think we’re on slightly different pages (I think I’m not explaining myself well enough)… I never said anything about respecting history.

It has nothing to do with how I feel about the original work. I also don’t think it’s disgraceful to manipulate history (which, btw. happens all the time in real life) nor do I automatically shun female depictions of historical figures. But I just thought it was unnecessary. It’s an extra thing that didn’t need to be there that just complicates things further.

As and aside, I’ve never studied Japanese history, so I don’t actually know the original source at all. It’s not necessarily about respecting the original work, but more about the huge question mark.

For example, if I wanted to tell a story about, say, the Civil War, and in my version of the story, Lincoln, Lee, Grant, and all the important figures are all female. But things still just happen as loosely what happens according to popular belief. Wouldn’t that just seem awkward? The story is taking something most people know well, and introducing a very ridiculous twist to it that makes zero sense in furthering the story or the characters.

  3. @fkeroge says:

Well, I guess I don’t have to watch this anymore. Someone has been bugging me for a while to watch this, but I really couldn’t get into the mood to. And with this review of yours, I now have a solid reason not to touch it. Thank you for your review. 🙂

    • Yi says:

Yea, this is definitely something I don’t think I should have given any time. It’s not that it’s bad. It’s just that in the long run–like in a year or so–it would’ve been as if I had never seen it. For those thirteen episodes, it was an decently interesting series, but nothing worthwhile. So yea, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re looking for a bland, forgettable experience.

  4. When I read the plot line to this series I was like wait is this going to be another Inuyasha series?! Well it does scream that to most people. I only did a first impressions of this back when it was released and quickly dropped it after one episode, well I did end up going back to watch the rest of it and it became really fun! Hideyoshi really does make things bright and happy I was instantly drawn in just by her alone she was fun to watch interacting with all the other generals.

That dog was awesome! I think he represents the viewer or the guys/girls that sooooo wanted to see all the girls have some fun together he always showed up during the fantasy scenes, my favorite character besides the dog and Hideyoshi probably Oda! She is so damn strong but also very dense when it comes to love then again she is a general so she probably has no time for that.

I wonder if we are getting another season? I know the way this one ended it leaves that option open probably an all furry world…probably will be terrible xDD

    • Yi says:

It does remind me a bit of Inuyasha, although with a significant difference. In Inuyasha, that the girl comes from our present is given appropriate weight, whereas here in Sengoku Otome, that Hideyoshi is from our world just seems like a random trivia. It adds nothing to the story (except of course to give a very awkwardly forced reason Oda Nobunaga is a woman), and she could have been just another clumsy carefree kind-hearted girl from any world.

Sengoku Otome actually reminds me a lot more of Koihime Musou. From what I know, the original game the anime is based on also follows this premise–someone went back to an alternative past where famous legendary warriors are female.

I do think that Hideyoshi is a lot of fun to watch. And there are a few other really interesting characters. Nobunaga is super sexy, and Tokunyan is my favorite. The bits of yuri are cute sometimes too. I hated the dog though. Maybe he does serve as the male perspective in the show, but he just feels so unnecessary… And actually kind of low. To make it worse, the series ends with him scheming something.

It feels very much like the anime is setting up for something, perhaps a second season. However, I really hope there’s no more Sengoku Otome. Unless it is an all furry world, one season is enough.

  5. Smithy says:

When I first read about this show back when it was going to air I hoped it’d be a nice series a bit like “Koihime Musou”, didn’t expect too much but hoped to see nice yuri shenanigans in a historical light martial battle setting.
Skimmed through the first two episodes as I just couldn’t get into this series… always there for some good yuri fun but this show just felt too convoluted, illogical and just not all that good.
Your review sums that up very nicely, it’s not really a bad show, but not a good one either.

Wonder when we’ll get a nice real yuri series with a historical setting someday (whether it be serious/dramatic or a comedy).

    • Yi says:

The premise does sound a bit like Koihime Musou, especially the visual novel it’s based on from what I know of the visual novel. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite match up…

Agreed that it’s too convoluted, too illogical, and just not good. I really didn’t feel that great after watching this, nor do I want more even with the unfinished feel of the ending.

It’d be nice to get a nice yuri anime set in the olden days. I can’t think of any right now though. The closest I know might be Koihime Musou, but the idea of those characters as female fan service just feels too weird for me.

  6. feal87 says:

Awwww, i have this series on the wait-list from a lot of time and all the bloggers around me continue to tease me with reviews… :O

Need to get time to watch it. Even if the story isn’t the best, the many cute girls are a must get. 😛

    • Yi says:

I wouldn’t say my review teases anything. If you read it, I think I came off very strongly negative about just how unmemorable Sengoku Otome is. ^ ^

Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend it, not even for the cute girls.

  7. gozieson says:

    Sigh, another one missed.

And yet again it seems that the moral of the story here is to keep things condensed without going too overboard with culture details. I for one am the type to keep yapping at my lil sis trying to explain to her something from the top right to the bottom. Though unfortunately, she is a bit of a ditz and not a very good listener who shuts me up at the bits she deems unnecessary.

Got trials to focus on now… T.T

P.S. Good luck in Taiwan, still hoping that you would post in simplified Chinese though…

    • Yi says:

It’s not really much of a miss. Sengoku Otome is very very mediocre, so I don’t think you’re missing out by not watching this.

That’s a pretty good rule to go by. There’s a fine line between being an exciting, broad exploration of different ideas and just having too much going on. Sengoku Otome definitely went too overboard.

Haha, your sister sounds pretty charming actually. ^ ^

Good luck with trials, and thanks for the good wishes.

p.s. I’m not sure why you’re so insistent on my posting in simplified Chinese. I don’t know how to type in simplified… And even if I did, I don’t really want to.

  8. Casshie says:

Well, this show does has it ups and downs, but this one actually disappointed me a little. I actually watched this for the shoujo ai/yuri element in it(as a big yuri fan i am), but the only good scene [Spoiler Alert!!] was the one where Oda mouth fed the medicine to Hideyoshi when she was sick..other than that, it mainly made up of lots of cliche scenes which i’m not too much a fan of. But if anyone is interested in shoujo ai/yuri we have a modern day shoujo ai/yuri -ish anime called YuriYuri, which i think is not bad, well compared to this one at least. It’s smth like K-ON.

    • Yi says:

Agreed. I had my hopes up too right when the season began and some were talking about how yurilicious it is. But it ended up falling short. I did enjoy those scenes, especially that scene you mentioned as well as the ending twist where Tokunyan falls for Nobunaga, but neither were enough for me to really like anime.

I’m actually watching Yuru Yuri right now, and it’s a nice little thing. A bit of K-On! vibes and a lot of yuri leanings. It’s cute. It’s silly. It’s sometimes annoying. But mostly, it’s just mindless fun.

      • Casshie says:

=) i actually stopped watching this show at episode 11, after Tokunyan stole the armor, did not have the time to finish this series, and i actually finished it awhile before reading your blog and so your review somehow relates well to how i felt after finishing the series.

        • Yi says:

Glad my review matches your thoughts! Great minds think alike I guess haha. ^ ^

Anyway, I got stalled on the series at multiple points as well, but somehow remember to finish in the end. It was definitely not high priority during the season. And judging by the number of buzz surrounding the series when it aired and now, it’s still not a high priority in most people’s minds.

  9. Ryan A says:

I’m glad this is a series I finished up, promptly.

I left the series scratching my head and wondering if I somehow missed a few episodes that should have smoothed out the exposition

I think the story is a huge issue in this series, especially because it was all over the place and maybe trying to do to much. The yuri love interest was a conflict for far too long, but there was a decent set of characters with fairly attractive designs. Had the series aimed at being episodic (lose the big plot) and maybe provided better sexuality subtext, it would have been more enjoyable.

Oh, and at least Tokunyan was pretty great. Yoshimoto was also pretty fun ^ ^ (sadly not enough to make up for such a poor show)

    • Yi says:

Exactly. This is a series best marathoned or finished off quickly. I almost forgot to watch the last episode after seeing episode 12. It wasn’t until I was going through my drafts in my notebook and saw I had written a post on it some time ago that I realized I haven’t yet finished this anime.

The story is all over the place indeed. Too many directions that do not mesh at all well together. The yuri love interesting is good as brief moments of cute, silly fun, but not really all that good as a core arc, as we see with Mitsuhide.

I could see how this could have been much better as an episodic, daily adventure of Hideyoshi in a fantasy world. In fact, my favorite episodes are the 100 ghost stories one and the play. Sengoku Otome also does indeed need much more work on its sexuality. It’s not enough to just throw Hideyoshi into a world full of females and leave it at that. That’s just ridiculous and… kind of insulting to the audience’s intelligence and tastes for coherency.

It’s a shame that the story kind of wastes the character designs. I really like Tokunyan and the gang, but they didn’t have room to be memorable.

  10. hoshiko says:

Hmm..now I don’t feel so bad for not picking up this series. Haha. Not sure why any anime would be bothered referencing historical events if they’re not going to be accurate.

    • Yi says:

Exactly. I still don’t understand why this anime had be set in the Sengoku Period and use notable historical figures. It’s not as if the story needed that. In fact, I think the whole Sengoku Era thing only hurts the anime.

Anyway, you shouldn’t feel bad at all for not picking this up. I feel kind of bad for having put time into this.

  11. Nopy says:

I can’t believe you actually finished Sengoku Otome, I couldn’t get past the first two episodes. It sounds like it’s a big mashup of several different anime series, the two biggest contributors I can think of are Fushigi Yuugi and Ikkitousen. I guess putting lots of good things together doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get something even better.

    • Yi says:

Me neither. I was actually kind of close to not finishing this series ever again. I got a little bit stalled on episode 12, and forgot all about this. Good thing MAL was around to remind me that I had one more epiosde to go.

It does feel like a big mashup of random ideas and random influences. It actually reminds me very much of Koihime Musou, especially the game its based on. A normal person from our world ends up in an alternative past warring time where historical warriors are women.

Anyway, doing too much is rarely a good thing I think. Sometimes it just feels too distracting and hard to follow, as is the case with Sengoku Otome.

  12. ZeroQ says:

I always find it interesting how you’re able to write such thorough reviews on various anime series, regardless of whether or not you actually like them. ^_^

I got into this show due to it’s promise of yuri-related antics (primarily the 8th pic on this page). It delivered, albeit moderately. But the whole idea of Hideyoshi convincing Nobunaga to settle disputes with silly contests instead of fighting wore thin rather quicky.
And that part about the teacher trying to restore her family’s legacy seemed kind of abrupt. Also, what was the deal with the eye patch she wore? XD

    • Yi says:

Thank you sweetie. As an aside, I find that it’s actually easier to write about anime that I don’t like than anime I do. As cynical as this may sound, it feels easier to criticize anime (and people and everything) than it is to praise them.

Agreed completely with your thoughts on Sengoku Otome. I got into it for the promise of yuri as well after seeing some people tweet about it early in the season. But in the end, the yuri just isn’t anything that memorable.

Further, other than the yuri relationships between the characters, all the other interactions–i.e. Hideyoshi softening Nobunaga’s tyrannical approach and such–are all pretty poorly developed. The teacher’s side arc is also not fleshed out at all, or set up properly. Her story is kind of just threw in there midway through the series. Much like her eye patch and most elements of this series, very unnecessary.

  13. IMSirius says:

“If you were to ask me in another year whether I had seen Sengoku Otome ~Momoiro Paradox~ (Battle Girls ~Time Paradox~), I would most likely say no. It is not that Sengoku Otome is a terrible anime—although it is certainly not good …”

I’ve seen a lot of anime like that. I enjoy watching them at the time, but then quickly forget about them once the series is over.

Was this awkwardly named anime fun to watch? Yes! Is it noteworthy? No. Could it have been? Perhaps, if more effort had been put in to the story. It had the feel of a badly planned role-playing game session, where people just happen to run in to each other and decide to go adventuring.

    • Yi says:

Most season, I would pick up a series that I deem to be a “throwaway” series. These are the anime that I use to kill time–usually something light on the mind, a bit silly, and very insubstantial… Something to enjoy at the moment and forget later. Sengoku Otome was last season’s throwaway anime for me. However, as that, this anime did a decent job I suppose. I’ve had better though…

“It had the feel of a badly planned role-playing game session, where people just happen to run in to each other and decide to go adventuring.
      Oh yes! That’s a very good analogy. ^ ^

  14. Bladezer says:

Ah this really is a guilty pleasure for me when I was watching it my brain kept n telling me that I really should be doing something else like, watching the rest of the precure seasons I missed or doing homework.

    • Yi says:

It’s kind of a guilty pleasure for me too, but not really. Sengoku Otome is neither guilty enough or pleasurable enough for me I guess. Haha. But I think I do kind of understand where you’re coming from. When I was watching Sengoku Otome, I always feel like I should be doing something productive.

  15. tsurugiarashix says:

Same as my feelings when I did the review. Nice, but just somewhat typical and not much else. Awesome pictures btw ^^

    • Yi says:

Thanks! Yea, I thought it was very typical in terms of what it brought for the viewer, and really not much substance. The animation isn’t too shabby though, so that’s good. ^ ^

  16. Cell says:

Although I usually finish series that I start, I had to give up halfway through this one because of it’s blandness. I just couldn’t bring myself to watch 6 more episodes.

  17. necrocosmos says:

I wanted to watch that show in the begining, but all comments about it were negative. I decided to not watch it :D. thou i still think graphic is nice, but all else sounds weak. Btw try watching yuru yuri its really good. So busy lately had no time to post anything :(. Anyway I hope u enjoy life in Taiwan, Kinda envious i wanna go to taiwan as well someday for a bit, hard to say how long, mby till i learn Taiwan language:D, thou it might be just some dream. Oww and whats more, oww i know Taiwan girls are sugoku kawaii~!

    • Cell says:

You could learn Taiwanese, but it would be better to just learn Chinese so that you can also visit china…

      • necrocosmos says:

i thou about learning chinease seriously, cos china grow in power last decade, and it appears they will sustain their growth for a time being. Its good investment afterall, 😀

    • Yi says:

@necrocosmos: I’m not too surprised most comments you’ve heard on it are negative, and I don’t think you’re missing out on too much by not watching this. The graphics are decent. There are some really nice elements, but overall still just kind of average.

I am already watching Yuru Yuri. It’s not bad indeed.

Thanks for the good wishes! I think Taiwan’s a wonderful place to visit (although to live for a long time might be another story). Anyway, the official and most used language in Taiwan isn’t actually Taiwanese, but Mandarin, so yea… Anyway, you might want to look up some back facts about Taiwan before you go just so you know what to expect. ^ ^

  18. Xine says:

I haven’t heard much about this series, good to know I’m not missing anything. ^^

Weird lukewarm limbo… makes me wonder, would you prefer to be highly criticized for having a work so bad that people make references to it or would you rather be forgettable because your material is bland?

    • Yi says:

Sengoku Otome really is super average. Nothing special at all.

“would you prefer to be highly criticized for having a work so bad that people make references to it or would you rather be forgettable because your material is bland?”

That’s a really good question, and I have no idea. As some people say though, any fame is good fame. I’m not sure how much I agree, but infamy does have its charms.

  19. myname? says:

HAHA i havent finished watching it either im on here now looking for the music collection of Sengoku Otome: Momoiro Paradox, there seems to be a character album out there but so far no decent links…
    ima keep looking

    • Yi says:

Hope you find what you’re looking for. ^ ^
Anyway, I thought the ending theme song is pretty fabulous. I really liked it.
Also, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. ^ ^
      Cheers!

  20. jreding says:

Besides the artwork, on which I commented on your earlier post, I think Yoshino as well as Tokunyan were quite cute, likeable and well-animated. The show also had some good and unintrusive fanservice re Yoshino. This is why I watched it and enjoyed it quite a bit. The rest of the cast mostly had these oversized chests which I find quite ridiculous and annoying, but each to his own.

I’ve been almost expecting that you would comment on the (slight) sm references since Yoshino (I think in ep. 10) explicitly complains about always ending up in bondage!

Postscriptum: Good luck for your time in Taiwan – I hope the stressful days calm down a bit soon!

    • Yi says:

Agreed about Tokunyan and Yoshino. They were two of my favorite characters in the series. One is just so evil and the other so lively. I really love it!

Interesting that you mentioned the unintrusive fanservice of Yoshino. I actually did notice that but never really noted much of it. But now that you’ve reminded me of it, that fanservice is indeed quite marvelous. I actually really like the few urination fanservice situations littered throughout the series, haha.

As for the breast sizes, they seem to range from the very flat to the very large as to capture every taste. It’s a bit unnecessary in my opinion, but yea, to each her own.

I totally forgot about the few instances of bondage, but yea, that would’ve been another good thing to note. I guess I really just don’t remember everything from the series. 😦

Anyway, thanks for the good wishes. I too really hope things start becoming a little more regular… a controllable routine is so much less stressful than this uncertainty.

      • jreding says:

After I wrote my comment it came to my mind that Taiwan maybe is not a bad place for someone who likes Yuri. I have seen two nice yuri-themed Taiwanese live-action movies (Spider lillies – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0891457/ and Blue Gate Crossing – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0333764/ ). I don’t know if they are representative to the tastes of Taiwanese people (maybe not, being “arthouse” productions) but still they left a positive impression of Taiwan with me!

        • Yi says:

While TV, movies, and the media may reflect the attitudes of a culture, I’m not sure how true it is in this case. Based on my limited time here, I would say that Taiwan is still fairly behind on LGBT issues, even if there are a few fringe works.

Also, there is a huge difference between someone who likes yuri and someone who cares about LGBT issues. A lot of men love lesbian pornography, but could care less for gay rights (and in fact, actively opposes it). For them, and for a lot of people even here, yuri is an object of lust and a curiosity that is framed in fantasy and not in real life.

  21. MyHatsOffToYou says:

You sure are commited. I wouldn’t even finish the anime that I find bad/silly/annoying early on anymore.

Did you finish the anime only because you can post a review on it? At least it helped me lose my appetite for this after reading the review.

    • Yi says:

I didn’t find it that annoying while watching. I guess I didn’t really feel anything too good or too bad to drop this consciously, so I stuck with it. I guess I only finished it because I needed something to do while eating dinner, and this was on my laptop at the moment. Haha.

I want to note though that this anime isn’t really actively bad. It’s just not good.

Oh, so that’s what you meant……

The post have the typical amount of flame : good-stuff ratio that I thought you disliked it quite a bit (just before hate); and I mostly trust your taste in animes too…….

        • Yi says:

I’d like to think I’m not flaming or hating on the show, but rather just criticizing certain elements. I would hope most people can realize it… But I guess it does come off like I’m bashing.

You know you’d love it if it was about American history. Jefferson-chan would be fucking tits!

But yeah, this show is rubbish. The only good thing about it was the red head with giant knockers.

Wow….thanks so much…I saw this on Netflix and was already not gonna watch it, but now I’m DEFINITELY not gonna watch it. I mean art of any realm follows the same rules: would you buy your own art, music, food?? And I’m sure if the people who did this show had to sit in a room with it, theyd probly kill themselves. But I’m glad I don’t have to. Anyways, it’s nice to see you’re doing good Yi! Long time no comment! I hope you’re doing good. I haven’t posted to my site because of getting hit by a car…still rehabbing too. But I’ll try to keep up with your posts. I’ll ttl.

I wouldn’t be this harsh about the anime or the people involved in its production, but yea, it’s not a stellar anime.

Anyway, thanks for visiting, and I hope everything–rehab, life… etc.–is going good for you too. Best of luck!

Ah, Im so late. I actually followed this series when it was first released but got bored by the 4th episode. Still me, being a fan of historical anime and yuri, I decided to watch it again after a while. So I finished it and was irritated at the ending. I was expecting some kind of kannazuki no miko ending where they’ll meet each other again. I found myself wondering whether the story had a follow up season but apparently not. Anyway, it had decent parts. I particularly liked ep 7.
All in all, I could compare this show to Panty and Stocking: loose storyline, bad scenes that are just so hilarious, excessive fanservice, and a shitty ending.

    • Yi says:

Yea, agreed. the story is one of the weakest part of the show. It’s just so messy. There are too many loose threads set up early on to be properly resolved in twelve episodes, and so we are left with a poor ending. The pace, while decent, hardly makes up for all the directions the anime has to go in because of the premise.

Thanks for reading and the comment, sweetie. ^ ^ And I’m sorry you had to sit through this… Although there sure are a few hilarious moments.

I’ve finally seen this show and i must that It is one of the best series that i’ve seen. It had nice action and a bit yuri. Thank god it was different from other poor animes where females are all over some lame ass guy who tries to act cool.

    • Yi says:

While I wouldn’t say it’s the best series that I’ve ever seen, it definitely has its strong suits. Love the yuri, the bits of action, and some elements of the animation. And, indeed. It’s very much better than the bunch of harem anime where girls are unreasonably infatuated with a poorly-written, boring guy.

      • Ghz says:

By saying best i was comparing it with the harem series which i’ve watched in the past e.g like princess lover, they are my noble masters etc, which were totally pathetic in every way possible. I really liked the female lead as she was strong and kinda bad ass which u will find rarely or none in any of the latest animes.

  26. Ghz says:

Ah! QB. I have only watched rurou-no-senshi. The characters in it sure were kinda interesting and not to mention the excessive fan service lol. The fourth season is currently airing, I hope it turns out better. I am looking forward to watch Murder Princess. I’ve heard its a really good series.

    • Yi says:

I’ve read a bit of the Murder Princess manga, and I thought it was fun. I haven’t seen the anime though. As for QB, I am looking forward to starting the fourth season. From what I’ve heard from friends, Rebellion is wonderful.
