Every once in a while, I like to write something about my favorite visual novel series (and my favorite yuri), Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo. When I saw this image, I knew I had to post something.
News of an anime adaptation has been circulating for a while. That is a spoiler from the anime.
It all started a few days ago when a regular reader clued me in on this lovely page in Yuri Hime chapter 20 teasing the much anticipated Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo anime:

As I was reading yuri hime vol. 20 I saw this page…
I think its officially for 18+ only. you can update you post if you’re not busy.”

I immediately looked around some sources for confirmation and found that spoiler image. There were previous doubts by some over the nature of the Sono Hanabira anime. Like hossamilan, I always thought it was going to be an adult OVA. These confirm that. (Good call Yi!)
Some have also been asking when it is expected to be released… confirmed to be on July 30th.
The page does not give much information. It includes just a brief synopsis of Anata to Koibito Tsunagi and short character introductions for Reo and Mai. If you have gone through the visual novel, there should not be anything too surprising (other than the stunning beauty of seeing Reo and Mai animated). If you have not played the game, I would highly recommend it, as it is one of the more popular of the Hanabira series.

There is even more great news, albeit older news that I did not have a chance to make a post for. In an earlier comment, Sellers mentioned a new couple.

Fuguriya has announced that there will be two releases this summer. One is a re-make of Anata to Koibito Tsunagi with slight differences. The other will feature a new couple. Planned for the end of June, Hanabira 9 will be drastically different from the rest. I am really looking forward to seeing this new yuri pair.
Anyways, huge thanks to Sellers, AXYPB, hossammilan, enri (who regularly sends me yuri related news), and other commenters. I love reading everyone’s feedbacks, even if they are just about your feelings for something. I always take what you write to heart.
Also, big thanks goes out to you readers. You are a driving motivation behind this blog.
With that said, I will be quite busy over the next few days. I graduated from college today! In a few days, I will be moving to Taiwan and staying there for the next two months. This will be both a stressful yet exciting time for me. With a lot on my mind and a tight schedule, please forgive my shortcomings in writing and responsiveness.

Oh my… well, there’s not much to say aside from the fact that I’ll be watching this. Hope we’ll be in for a solid group of characters that’ll get a good amount of development.
@zzeroparticle: Hehe… Don’t expect too much in terms of story, characters, development, or anything else. It’s not going to have depth or any sort of literary value.
I’m excited only because Hanabira has a soft spot in my heart.
I would only recommend it to those into yuri genre though.

An OVA sounds good, visual novels are not exactly my favourite medium, and an OVA sounds good.
BTW, where are the yuri PG13 series, where the sex happens off-screen? I think their lack is quite telling… of something.
There are a lot of those. Of course, the quality of the majority of them are open to debate.
On the other hand, Shoujo Sect/Innocent Lovers (and OVA) & Hen’s OVA are the only other 18+ yuri animation of any kind, to the best of my knowledge. And Hen really isn’t all that yuri.
@Guy: I would suggest looking into Strawberry Panic for a PG13 yuri series. If you’re interested in yuri manga, then there are even more (one-shots, series…etc.).
I also always kind of assumed the girls in Marimite are having sex off-screen, but that may just be me.
@Swordwind: Off the top of my head, Strawberry Panic fits the bill the best. 18+ pure yuri is actually kind of rare. There seems to always be a man, a trap, or a futa mixed in most “yuri” OVA.
Mmhmm. Yamibou & Kannazuki No Miko has the 13+ thing going on too, but both of those are bad. Yamibou’s the better, if I’d have to choose. Steel Angel Kurumi too, but it was so unremarkable I don’t remember it in the slightest.
@Swordwind: Oh yea, I totally forgot about those. Yamibou… was decent for me. The character animation style looks a little off for me, and the ending is more than questionable. Kannazuki is great though (except for the mecha crap going on). I actually have not seen Steel Angel Kurumi, so will have to check that out.
For both Yamibou & Miko, the main plot was inane and terrible. The Yuri parts, however, were well done. Which is depressing.
It’d be the 2nd season & 3rd season of steel angel, I think the first one was more het.

@Smithy: I might actually have preferred a normal anime rather than 18+. I think it would then force the characters to have more depth. I’m not complaining though.

@Fabrice: I would actually recommend against this for you despite my excitement. Adult anime are always much more polarizing than regular anime, and if you are not into the genre, you might not want to waste your time.

I’ve never heard of the Hanabira series, but it looks good. I just recently started getting into yuri, and this looks like it might help me ease into the genre more 🙂

@Nopy: Hanabira a series of visual novels that focus on pure yuri relationships. Anyways, if you are just getting into yuri, this may be a bit more adult than what you’re looking for. Though if you are looking for something more sexual, I think this has a very good balance.

Hmm… Drastically different… maybe the couples will not be school girls like the previous games , that would be interesting. BUT Please don’t even think about involving MEN, or it will be drastically Disastrous.
@hossammilan: Yep yep, I am all for a fresh take on Hanabira as long as they keep penises out. We’ll see though in several weeks.
Fuguriya prides themselves on not including anything like that. Even in the second and fourth games at least, male characters exist and have lines but they’re never seen or heard. Their refusal to let anything get in the way is the major reason I follow them and it’s extremely unlikely they’ll start now.
@AXYPB: I’m fairly positive that this will still be yuri, but Fuguriya has been involved in hetero visual novels. Still, the Hanabira series has been really strict, which is good. ^ ^
They use a different name for non-yuri productions as stated in their FAQ. If this was to change, I would hope we would hear long before it becomes a fact.
Axy’s pretty correct. They’ve always, consistently stated they intend to keep Hanabira as it is. Of course, they could always change if they wanted, but I don’t that happening without a significant change. Their business plan seems to be pretty successful right now.

Anyways, if yuri is not your thing, then I’d suggest staying away from Hanabira.
I am highly anticipating this OVA, I hope it satisfies and caters to every Hanabira/Yuri fan. If ChuChu’s yuri brand A1C receives popularity – I’m sure they’ll consider more girl-girl projects in the future
Hopefully they’ll start with Kaede and Sara.
And then we can see more of Kaede without the glasses and braid combination. I like her better with her hair down – she acts more assertive.

Anyway, according to Bonku, at the end of one of the Hanabira doujin light novel things, Fuguriya discussed Hana9, but it was pure speculation.
He said he would like to make it about Runa’s sister.. or perhaps involve her, but I don’t see how that would work. She might be in college, but St. Michael’s college? Weird. Unless it takes place in her high school days, but that wouldn’t work. And they can’t mess with Takako x Runa.
…That’s just pure speculation, though. Hopefully this “drastic difference,” will be wonderful. I would hate it if it were based on Runa’s sister.. I didn’t really get a good impression of her while playing through 7.

I will be surprised if the original voices aren’t kept here. I don’t know if it’s regular practice to use different actors for anime adaptations from games, but I can’t imagine anyone else playing any characters from this series.
@AXYPB: I have no idea the usual practice for voice actresses either. Well, as long as it fits the character, I don’t mind who does it.
Usually for adult adaptations, the VN seiyuu are kept.

It is. Call me a purist, but I would not be as excited as I am if it was announced that different voices were used here. No such announcements were made, so I think the voice work is already finished.
@AXYPB: I have to confess. I can never really tell apart voice actresses as long as they sound rather reasonably similar. Still, it’s good to know and safe to assume that Reo and Mai will still be Reo and Mai.

Well… I’m just starting to enjoy yuri fully..I played all Hanabira VNs until now and let’s hope for a great yuri pair in the next one too…I think the OVA will lose some of the game’s art quality 😦
On another note:I thought Mayoi looked a lot like moving CGs rather than normal anime…and that the characters were somehow similar…but I would have never guessed that Peko did the art for it too(now it adds up)…and for another one I plan to play: Touji no Sato(or something similar)
@FT: Peko’s CGs have this really pretty glossy look to them, so to animate that completely in every frame would be kind of hard. Still, the anime will be done by the same people who did Strawberry Panic, so I’m not too concerned about art quality.
Mayoi Neko… has very inconsistent art now that it’s switched directors. Peko did the illustrations for the light novel, but as per usual for anime adaptations, the original artist does not have full control over the animation. Still, I think Peko’s characters and art does show through a bit. Love him!
I haven’t heard of Touji no Sato, but it looks decent. Enjoy. ^ ^

I did some research and I found that the OVA is #1 on the most preordered anime list on Getchu. I didn’t realize this was so popular.

In the weekly list for overall orders, only the DVD and Blu-Ray editions of Evangelion version 2.22 topped it. Since that was released, the OVA is above even the upcoming Blu-Ray volumes of Angel Beats and Bakemonogatari in preorders, which I understand are somewhat more worthy.
Speaking of that, do we even have any idea how long it will be? If they’re charging full price for it, I would expect up to 90 minutes.
@AXYPB: Beating Bakemonogatari and Angel Beats! That’s quite an achievement.
Anyways, the length is a good question. I had always assumed that it’d be a single episode OVA, so either 30 or 45 minutes… But that’s completely unfounded and I hope it’s longer. We’ll see June 30th.
Not to mention that it ranked just under Evangelion. Considering how popular that is, scoring next to it also speaks volumes of its anticipation.

chuchu’s website opened up yesterday. At the moment it’s only half-functional and doesn’t have anything we haven’t already seen, but I’ll keep track of it for any kind of promotional video or stills.
A development: The website states that the runtime is 23 minutes. I wonder if that’s per episode or the entire OVA, because that seems a little lean for all of the buildup over the months.
@AXYPB: I wonder how many episodes it is. I suspect that only 1 episode will be released on the 31st and it’d be 23 min. More might come in the future though. I’m not really basing that on anything other than experience with other OVA releases (Shoujo Sect).

Hmm, based on the extra (basically made up of the Fuguriya staff discussing the game and ideas for future games) of the Erisu/Shizuku light novel that was recently translated, I’m thinking that Hanabira 9 may be a harem type scenario starring Runa’s sister (and probably high school-aged Takako). Which is indeed, different, for a Hanabira at least. Maybe not drastically, actually makes it sound more like a typical eroge.
That was only speculation. It may not even figure into the final product in any form. It wouldn’t make much sense for a single character to be featured twice at different times. It’s different, but I get the feeling that the new pair are new characters.
@wahaha: That would certainly be a drastically different approach albeit still within the bounds of Hanabira. It’s something I wouldn’t mind seeing either.
@AXYPB: I want to point out though that all the older characters have a second visual novel. I actually could see Runa’s sister being in Hanabira 9. Still, all this is just speculation. Can’t wait!
Now that I think about it, it wouldn’t make sense to me for Runa’s sister to be in the ninth game. She has never been referred to by name and it would make some of the seventh game and the net series sound awkward if she is now. It makes sense that Runa didn’t, but if Takako’s relation to her is as close as the rest of them, it would sound strange if she was revealed to actually have a name that Takako never said out loud.
@AXYPB: True true! We’ll see soon. Either way though, I wouldn’t mind a more harem-y storyline this time. One thing that Hanabira has been missing has been conflict. Unlike other visual novels, the romance has always been very linear and the pairing set from the beginning. I would like to see either a girl having to make a choice or a harem type “pairing.”
I’d rather not.

Well if they follow the pattern they already set; three different pairs of girls, two games per pair, then they need another pair and a new game for all three pairings. XD And if it is a three-girl pairing, then it might take longer to draw…
And they have those three chibi girls all over their site (Misaki Shitara, Rin Aso, and Aoi Otsuki) are they ever going to get their own game? I have a feeling that they will and since they ineract on those little blurbs on the site that they might be made into a three-girl pairing…

Voice of Mai is change.I don’t like this voice,the voice in the game is better!
I like this Mai better, the Mai in the novel I found annoying. I like Reo’s voice from the novel better though, she sounds too innocent in the OVA and she is supposed to have that stubborn and slightly nasty side to her.
@Tsuchiya: Thanks for the download! The voice of Mai is different, but I think I can live with it.
@Selli: I actually really like the original Mai. Her confident, big-sister personality is really endearing. I thought the trailer voice sounds much gentler and created a slightly different image of her.
I like soft voices, that’s probably why I like ’em so much. XD They’re a lot softer and kinda cute… It also makes them seem a little bit younger…
@Selli: They do sound a bit younger, which I guess is a good thing.
