A Kiss for the Petals – My Dear Prince | Watashi no Ouji-sama

Hanabira

After much waiting, I finally got around to playing the second installment of Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo.

Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo Watashi no Ouji-sama (その花びらにくちづけを わたしの王子さま) translates to “to kiss that flower petal… my prince-sama” or something like that. In Ouji-sama, the yuri happens in the same school as the first Hanabira; in fact, Yuuna-sempai from the first one makes a guest appearance.

Once again, this visual novel plays out very linearly and has only a few choices that don’t affect the single ending. Of course, Hanabira games tend not to value plot, but instead put emphasis on the clean and sexy CGs.

Kaede is the overly shy class president. She hates attention and lacks confidence. Sara is her cousin and childhood best friend. The two were separated at a young age when Sara’s family moved.

A Kiss for the Petals My Dear Prince Watashi no Ouji-sama Kaede Sara Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo
Sara (left) and Kaede (right)

The story begins with Sara’s transfer to Kaede’s school. Of course, Sara never forgot about Kaede and she still loves her, but no longer just as a cousin and a childhood friend. However, problems arise because Sara is now a celebrity status teen model. Kaede has a hard time with all the attention her being with Sara attracts. Furthermore, she constantly feels that she is not good enough for Sara. Over the course of the game, Sara helps Kaede to eventually gain confidence in herself and together, they form an even stronger relationship.

Sara and her ouji-sama

Personally, I like Sara a lot more than Kaede. I guess I’m not too into the withdrawn, unsure, introverted, annoying type of girl. Moreover, Kaede is a little too large in the chest. Sara, on the other hand, looks more loli and has a much more charming personality.

Sara… 萌死了.

There are three other Hanabiras as of now. Will they ever get translated?

Edit: Yes, they will. And there are way more than three now. Check out the reviews below.

Download for the game here: Watashi no Ouji-sama Download

As usual, I want to say something about the download… Since I’ve gotten quite a few requests for this both in the comments and in private contact, I decided to upload this is for sampling purposes only. Please buy the real copies of the game if possible. I bought mine in Taiwan. I think they can be found online too.
With that said, enjoy and drop a line if you downloaded from here. ^_^
Don’t download if you’re too young!

    Wow! Cool! It’s been translated.
I should get the patch so I can force myself to practice more Chinese. :p
Yah, I like Sara too since I like genki characters in general, though perhaps Kaede’s personality is more closer to my own. :p

  3. Yi says:

Yea, the Chinese patch really helped me out.

  4. YURIYUMEchan says:

    I’m sorry, I think I’m stupid, but I don’t see a download link…Can you tell me?

  5. Yi says:

Loll That’s because I didn’t put one. But now that you asked, I will.

  10. thais says:

    are you sure thats translated??

  11. Yi says:

The download just above your comment is for the Chinese patch. Someone asked for it earlier, so I uploaded it. I’m pretty sure it’s translated because I played it.

I’m not sure who’s working on the English translation, but right now, I don’t think there is one.

  12. thais says:

    okay ^^
but i did the first download, and i wasnt able to play it
when i try something in another language appear
i dont know what to do
    can you help??

  13. Yi says:

    Watashi no Oujiko Sama Download

This is the game file you have to download to play. Make sure that’s the one you downloaded. A simple extract should allow you to play it. If it does not play, try using AppLocale.

I’m not exactly sure what the problem is. Post back here if you still can’t get it to work.

    —————————-

OK, I just tried playing it. It’s been a while since I played.
To get it to play, simply rename the extracted folder to something in English, and it will work.
For example, the game will be in a folder named “わたしの王子さま”, just rename it to “Hanabira 2″ or something.

  14. thais says:

    thanks a lot ^^
    it really help =D

  15. William says:

hey!! I really enjoy the game,
but how can i play with the original language in my game only show some weird symbol
    can you help me?? :(

  16. Yi says:

@ thais: No problem. Glad you got it to work.

@ William: Hm… In mine, it shows Japanese. I didn’t really need to do anything.
Do you have East Asian Languages installed on your computer?

  17. William says:

to be honest… no i dont have it
but how can i get it?? :)

  18. Yi says:

I’m not sure exactly how to get it; my computer came with it.
    You can try this:

    1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Control Panel, and then click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
    2. Click the Regional and Language Options icon, and then click the Languages tab.
    3. In the Supplemental languages support box, check the box for Install East Asian Languages.
    4. Click Apply and OK.

If it does not work, you’re going to need to do some intense google-ing.

  19. C says:

arrr i cant dl the game using megaupload

    ——————————————

    help pls T.T

  20. William says:

    okay :) im gonna try

  21. Yi says:

@C: Hm… it works for me. I do know that Megaupload is inaccessible to some, so I will link a mirror to Badongo. This will take a while, so check back when I have the mirror up.

@ William: Best of luck. Let me know if it works.

    ———————————————-

    Badongo mirror linked

  22. shalala says:

Hmm is the download one that you have translated? because i really wanna play a pure yuri and is the story any good as well?

  23. Yi says:

Nope not translated yet. The first Hanabira has not been translated, and nor are the later ones.
I don’t know any pure yuri visual novel that’s been translated.

There are several that are being worked on so far though, and hopefully completed soon.

I Can’t download what happen with the link ?

  26. Yi says:

@Guro: The Megaupload link works fine. If that does not work for you because of your region, try the link a few comments above. That one should work fine too.

  27. Anonymous says:

How does the Chinese patch work? Granted, I’m still studying a bit of Chinese myself and I can’t quite seem how to get to make the patch work in the game just yet. The characters just come out in a series of question marks like this:
    http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu101/Faytalie/hanabira2.jpg

    How do I make the Chinese characters appear? o.o;

  28. Yi says:

@Anon: Place all the files from the Chinese patch in the Hanabira directory. Find the one that says set language, and choose your language. You need to make sure you have the font though, so put the MSD and huakangzongyuan.TTC in your font folder to install the Chinese fonts.
    Good luck. ^ ^

  29. Anonymous says:

@Yi: o__O Yeah, I already did that and installed the font. I tried to move MSD in my font folder, but it says MSD isn’t a font, so it can’t be installed? >__>

  30. Yi says:

    O ok. I guess MSD isn’t a font… sorry it’s been a while since I played this one. huakangzongyuan.TTC should be though.
Also, I think your computer needs to have East Asian languages.

  31. Anonymous says:

Hmm, yeah, I already installed the Chinese language onto my computer. Does it matter what type of Chinese? (I installed simplified and traditional). Also, I have Windows Vista, if that makes any difference.
    Sorry about this. xD;

  32. Anonymous says:

Ah, I’ve got it now. I just had to change my locale to Chinese simplified (PRC). Thanks Yi!

  33. Yi says:

@Anon: Glad you figured it out on your own. Enjoy. ^ ^

  34. J says:

Is this translated to English? All that shows up in the text box is a bunch of tiny squares, with the occasional random symbol. The CG’s are hot, but it would be great to read the story as well.

  35. Yi says:

@J: This has not been translated. That may be the reason you are getting the boxes. If you want to read the Japanese, I think you would need to have East Asian Languages pack. Otherwise, I suppose it’s just a lot of waiting.

  36. blur says:

    Oh Shit!
    NSFW! Lol…

Boss’s Secretary was standing behind me. Thank God she walked away…

  37. Yi says:

@blur: Oops… sorry. Perhaps I should label these types of posts. I hope she didn’t see your screen.

  38. blur says:

Lol. Please don’t apologize. And no labels required.

I came in knowing pretty well what potential eye candies awaits me. :p
Just that the though escaped me for a moment when I was blog surfing.

Must have been the work. -.-”

  39. blur says:

    typo:
    that the “thought” escaped
    :(

  40. Yi says:

@blur: Yea, some of my post do get a bit ecchi. :)

  41. Sellers says:

I don’t think Kaede is a terribly likable character (at least in this game/vn) either; I definitely prefer Sara here.

  42. Yi says:

@Sellers: Yea. I think her personality is too weak.

  43. Lolorinixer says:

Can you put the CG set up for this one?

  44. Yi says:

@Lolorinixer: Yea sure. Here’s the CG pack on MF: http://www.mediafire.com/?km2djmkgtnm

  45. Sellers says:

Alright, the (requested) Mediafire Download link for this game:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?u2nnmgemujz

Because I realized that there isn’t a post for Hanabira 6, I’m also posting the link for that game here:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?ayzwimdhmue

In addition, I’ve also realized that MediaFire has a 200mb limit for uploads for free accounts, and both Hanabiras 5 & 7 are larger than that, even when compressed. I’ll think for a work around, but can’t promise anything. Sorry.

  46. Sellers says:

Eh, screw it. I’ll just upload them in two parts. Less aesthetically pleasing and efficient, but nothing else I can think of seems worth it.

  47. Yi says:

@Sellers: Thanks so much. If it’s too much trouble, please don’t worry too much about it. You’ve been a great great help! ^ ^

  48. Sellers says:

Don’t mention it; it’s not exactly heavy labor.

  49. omega_kirby says:

I’ve downloaded It from many sites incluiding here but it didn’t work, instead, when I wanna play It, there appears an error message board with fonts I cant understand
and closes the game…do you know what could It be? also there is a setup icon but when I click on It there happens the same that with the games executable (HANABIRA2)…Can you help me?thanks from ya for the download

  50. Yi says:

@omega_kirby: After you extract it, it might help to change the folder name into something in English. Good luck.

  51. omega_kirby says:

Thank you! It worked after many time!^^

  52. Yi says:

    @omega_kirby: NP NP. ^ ^

  53. Ana says:

hey about these game, I’m sorry I’m new at this, I don’t get them I have downloaded this like a thousand times and I never get to play them, when I open the rar non of the files works, or they don’t have format so, I don’t get it, sould pleeeaseee somebody help me??

    sorry 4 the bad english.

  54. S.S. says:

I was able to download and everything just fine, but whenever I try to play, the only thing that comes up is the screen with a picture of them on it. No title, no options, nothing. I’ve even renamed the folder from its japanese title, and it still does nothing… This makes me sad because I have tried with all the other games too (up to 6) and the only one I’ve managed to get working is the first one. Any ideas?

  55. Sellers says:

That sounds strange. The most obvious technical difference between the games is that Hanabira One lacks the “setup” .exe that every subsequent game has. This setup file is really mostly a picture, with a few options towards the bottom. Assuming that you aren’t accidentally opening this file instead of the game, and that your Hanabira One .exe is properly working, I’m admittedly a bit unsure.
Does the program freeze, or is it responsive, acting as if there was nothing more to load? Additionally, what’s your OS?

  56. Yi says:

@S.S. and Sellers: Make sure the file you are opening is the .exe game file. Also, make sure you’ve downloaded the right files.
Other than that, refer to what Sellers said.

  57. S.S. says:

I have been using the proper exe. Actually, if I ever try clicking the setup file it gives me this error message: INIファイルの読み込みに矢敗しました. I can’t actually read Japanese properly yet, but according to my dictionary and the online translator it says something about the INI file being unable to download or read or something and something about arrows… Whenever I try the actual game’s exe. the only thing that show up is a window and the background picture for the start menu fades in without any text at all.
    Oh, and I have Vista.

  58. Sellers says:

You, sir, have my interest. Unfortunately, it’ll be difficult for me to reproduce your error, as I only have access to computers with XP and 7.

I’ve downloaded Yi’s file, and it’s in perfect working order.

Sorry for asking if you’ve done something stupid, but it was necessary. Furthermore, I’ll go ahead and questions that probably appear similarly unhelpful: Have you installed, and set your computer to, a Japanese language? (I’m assuming you have, if Hanabira 1 is working without issue) Have you tried running the program in XP mode? Do you have the “BGM”, “DATA”, “MGD”, “MSD”, “SE” and “VOICE” files in the same directory as the .exe? What’s your favorite color?

The last question is, of course, a joke.

  59. S.S. says:

Okay, I’ve searched for everything and all the files seem to be present. My computer does have Japanese set up. I tend to favor the color blue, but will not object to most others aside from certain shades of pink. And I have tried setting it to run in compatibility mode for XP, if that’s what you meant by XP mode. If that’s not what you meant, please inform me and I will try that too.

My computer also tends to be known for random inability to function, so I may attempt to play the games on a friend’s computer (with their consent) if I get the chance just to see if it’s the computer itself that has the problem.

  60. Sellers says:

Well played. I like blue too. You also correctly attributed “xp mode” as “compatibility mode for XP”. You’ll need to change your language settings to Japanese, or run it through Applocale.
    Instructions:
Control Panal–> Date, Time, Language & Regional Options –> Regional & Language Options –> Standards & Format.

Open the box and switch it to “Japanese”. If Japanese isn’t an option, make sure you’ve installed “East Asian Language Packs” (or something similar to “East Asian Language Packs”). This is easily available for download, for free, legally.

Windows 7 Users need to also:
Control Panel -> Change Display Language -> Administrative -> Change System Locale for non Unicode programs to Japanese.

  61. S.S. says:

I have used it in Japanese. Same scenario. It’s rather frustrating…

  62. Sellers says:

Other than re-downloading the game and seeing if that helps at all, we’ve exhausted all the usual suspects. I’m sorry for your computer’s evidently well-earned disrepute.

  63. S.S. says:

Thank you for all the help you have offered, even though it has so far been in vain. I hope to be able to play the game properly in the future though.

  64. Yi says:

@Sellers: Thank you for all the help you offered. Even though S.S. still could not get it to work, I’m sure someone else would benefit a lot from reading your conversation. So thanks. ^ ^

@S.S.: Best of luck. I hope you get it to work.

Yeah, maybe. Tell me if there’s anything I can do SS.

  67. Mi0 says:

can this visual novel be played in windows 7 or it has difficulties on it?

    • Sellers says:

People tend to have a few difficulties. Assuming the comp is already set to Japanese, it’s recommended that you

      A. Control Panel -> Change Display Language -> Administrative -> Change System Locale for non Unicode programs to Japanese

and B. Run it in Compatibility mode for XP.

      Hope that’s useful.

  68. Kevin says:

I really love those games, I just played the 1 one with english translation.. I loved it. I really hope for a english translation patchs for all the other ones too..

Btw, why are everyone writing chinese? This game is Japanese, or are they talking about a chinese sub patch ?

    • Yi says:

@Kevin: At the time I wrote the post, I played it through with a Chinese translation patch. That’s why in one of the images, it’s in Chinese.
English translations are much slower, but thanks to Count Pacula, people are picking them up.

  69. DUDESTARR says:

what are the links for the english patch for all the games translated??

  70. azndragonmaster says:

is there a translation for this game?

  71. poga says:

the mediafire link for the cg seems to be hanabira 2′s and not the cg of hanabira 1….

    • Yi says:

@poga: That’s because this is the post for Hanabira 2. If you’re looking for CG for Hanabira 1, they should be in the comments of that post.

  72. poga says:

ooops….I though I was posting a comment on hanabira 1….sorry….by the way I finally downloaded all of the release(games,cg,patch) thanks to your never ending effort on replying to my stupid comments.heheh…I haven’t been able to sleep lately, probably because I’m too excited finishing all the games and waiting for the next update on the anime!!!
I honestly think that this isn’t ecchii in any way, but I keep on having nosebleeds whenever I hear the voices of the characters kissing, moaning, groaning, and any obscene sounds they make….(I could still hear the sounds of tongue sucking in my head 0.o) I wonder if could I rip the sounds and turn them into my ringtone, LOL

    • Yi says:

@poga: Haha if you had those as ringtones, that would undoubtedly make some very awkward moments.
But honestly, I don’t really consider this that ecchi as well. It does have sex but it’s more about the characters’ personalities and Peko’s artworks.
      … Who am I kidding?

No news as of the anime yet. Mayoi Neko and new releases seems to preoccupy Fuguriya right now.

  73. Neko sawatari says:

No new information on the English patch yet ._.?

    • AXYPB says:

I’ve sent out emails asking for help on technical issues weeks ago, but no one has answered back yet. I haven’t made much progress at all.

      • Yi says:

@AXYPB: Good luck and take your time. It’s a huge huge project you’re undertaking. ^ ^

        • AXYPB says:

I’m under the (probably mistaken) impression that it isn’t as big as you say it is because much of the work is already done. I was thinking maybe I can get the help of the teams working on other games once they finish their projects since there’s little to do on this game other than translate about 15% of the script and work around technical issues I’m sure they are already working on. As for me, I’m just looking through the scripts and doing my own copy editing since there’s little else I can do at this point. I was hoping to have this done by the end of summer, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Regardless, I will not give up. I feel like I owe an obligation to CountPacula since he released a patch for the first game and I have the ability to continue his work with the immediate sequel. I gave my word that this is going to be finished and as long as the people who can make that happen are still online, I will see this through to the end.

        • Yi says:

@AXYPB: I wish you the best!

  74. yutakucchi says:

uhmm.. can i ask if there’s english patch yet for this game. im new at this site and i have uploaded the hanabira 1 and i like it–love it so i’m looking for the nxt w/c is this and i cant find the english patch, if there is..?

    • Yi says:

@yutakucchi: There isn’t an English patch yet for this. There are scattered scripts around, but I haven’t been able to consolidate them into one place.

AXYPB has is working on a patch, so look forward to that!

  75. yutakucchi says:

aah.. okay thanks! ..i’ll sure be looking forward to AXYPB’s completed patch. uhmm, thanks in advance, AXYPB!!

Hi maybe I’m kinda stupid but can you tell me where I can watch the anime?? thanks

  81. StayCold says:

hey do you know when the english patch for part 2 will come out?

  82. MyHatsOffToYou says:

The game is awsome and I really do thank you for it, but right after the end of part 15 (or the 15th or whatever), the game just returned to the main screen. The story seems to end too abruptly somehow, was it suppose to do that?

    • AXYPB says:

If you didn’t see end credits, your game actually ended at the 12th section. Start over and make different choices. Use Skip to do this more easily.

      • MyHatsOffToYou says:

That was……… one of my least expected solution. This time I tried choosing the first choice all the time and IT WORKS. I thought the story is completely linear and each choice only affect immediate response; is there some sort of trigger in the end depending on what choice you make? Anyway, dōmo arigatō ^.^

        • Yi says:

The only two possible endings is with or without the last scene. I always just make the first choice and it usually gets me through the whole game. I guess there is a trigger, but it doesn’t lead to alternative ends. Just complete vs. incomplete.

  83. Johnny says:

This eroges are so easy… always choice the first choice ! :p

  84. Ichigo says:

i just finished playing the first one and…im in awe….it was AMAZING! i really wanna play this one aswell but i cant read or speak japanese or chinese. i know people keep asking this but, how’s the english patch coming along?? id really like to know.

Someone could my explain my problem ?

PS : i saved it once without problem, i cant explain why it doesnt work anymore. :( :(

  91. Yuffie says:

Finally after years just trying listening to the voices and understand something (ok that some scenes explain itself), there is a english patch of one of my favorite sono hanabira games *-* Thank so much all the people who worked on this project!

I don’t live alone, need to wait everybody sleep or try to play and press ESC when somebody come, but then can happens what happend in ore imouto ~giggles~

    • Yi says:

Loll. Hopefully no one catches you when you’re in the middle of a scene.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

I wonder what happened when Yuffie found out that Esc just hides the dialog and shows the CG in full glory instead of hiding the game… :D I know I almost had a bad accident before knowing I should press alt-tab instead ^ ^

    -Kaede’s best lines: “I am a tree”…”I am a rock”.
-As expected after reaching the cameo scene: Yuuna is without a doubt, the most powerful and influential lady in the Sono Hanabira series. I was wondering what impact she had on this couple in their first meeting…now I know. Her power is indeed absolute. Now I patiently look forward to her impact in Mai and Reo’s relationship.
-Also, Kaede’s insecurity that we all know she’ll get over eventually is not that bad to be honest. It’s basically an expected insecurity. I was actually thinking that it might be worse, but it’s not.

    ALL HAIL QUEEN YUUNA!

    • AXYPB says:

Frankly, in the first game, neither Yuuna nor Nanami’s characters were well-developed. Nanami’s character was expanded in the web series “Joshikou no Waidan” with the help of her three friends from that story, but Yuuna’s character wasn’t explored until the visual novel sequels. Since most of the narrative of the first game emphasized how graceful and ladylike she is, it’s more surprising seeing her so eager to directly bolster female-female relationships personally, even going so far as to shape them to something similar to what she has. It’s probably for the best that Yuuna and Nanami’s story doesn’t continue until after the other two pairs got sequels since presumably we can see some of their influences get paid back.

      • EmperorG says:

Well, as you’ve figured out by now, I’m a Yuuna fan. I praise her so much because of all the characters in the series, she makes me laugh the most. Now do I sound negative and upset because I’m defending Yuuna so much? I’m not upset. That’s because your arguments explaining against their validity in the series are strong and acceptable ones. I also find it kinda sad that most of their character development occurs in the Drama CDs and not in their exclusive episodes. I also know that everyone else also gets major character developments in the DCDs as well, but still…
In any case, I still stand by my claim that Yuuna’s influence in the school is a very powerful one since as you pretty much confirmed, she wishes to influence and support more shoujo-ai relationships similar to her own.

I don’t know exactly what happens in episode 6, but for now I’m assuming that they’re mostly working on improving their sexual relationship or something. Either that or there is an actual issue that’s temporarily creating dramatic tension between the two.

    • Yi says:

Haha, yea Kaede has pretty funny lines. All the girls do actually. I just want to give them huge hugs.

One of Yuuna’s roles in this series (besides being Nanami’s lover) is setting the other couples together. For me, she also feels like the role model. The girls in the game look to her for advice, and we the audience look to her and Nanami as the standard for yuri story. Her appearance in this further adds to that role. I actually didn’t find her eagerness to bolster lesbian relationships particularly surprising given what we’ve seen from her in the first game. She feels like she has a little bit of Mugi (K-On!) in her.

Kaede’s insecurity still frustrates me a little, but she’s lovely.

      p.s. I’m now also a huge fan of Yuuna. I really can’t pick a favorite though…

      • AXYPB says:

I’ve come to appreciate everyone’s strengths and flaws. I can’t pick a favorite myself, but I can say that Kaede reminds me of someone I once knew.

If only we can find a single dedicated translator with more than a passing interest in this series. I would do whatever it took to have them translate everything.

Kaede is my favorite, but I think I might be in the minority

    • Yi says:

I don’t think you’re in the minority, especially now with an English translation release. While I can’t pick a favorite, Kaede is certainly someone I really enjoy.

  95. afkeroge says:

After listening to Zutto Shiawase na Kiss and Kaede-chan Super Mode, I now realized that the Sono Hana Series is something very special. It’s not just yuri, it’s yuri with more depth and character than most other stories, even amongst the hetero love stories. What they do in the games, the short stories and the drama cd’s are always interesting, funny, ecchi and heartwarming, and I got those feelings at the right times in the playing of the visual novels and listening to the drama cd’s. Though I have to say that listening to the drama cd’s while in public transport is certainly not a good idea… I always feel like someone’s staring at me… especially during the ecchi tracks. It was quite a unique experience, actually. :D

    • Yi says:

Agreed. Fuguriya has really built a very complete world and strong characters around this series. It’s quite amazing.

Haha, I can kind of understand that. Right now, I’m living alone, but I still close the door when I play these games. It’s still not as extreme as listening to ecchi stuff in public. Loll.

      • afkeroge says:

Even though I had headphones on, I just can’t shake the feeling of someone being able to hear what’s going on. I wanted to pause or turn off the thing, but i was unable to due to the player being unaccessible because the bag containing the player is under my seat in the bus. Not to mention that just pulling off the headphones from the socket would be a big mistake since the player will than go to speaker mode, and we don’t want that happening, do we? :D

        • Yi says:

Loll, make sure to be careful about the volume and the cord. Wouldn’t want you to get arrested for public indecency. ^ ^

  96. EmperorG says:

Finished the game last night and not much has changed from my 1st impression.
-Sara is all kinds of adorable.
Kaede’s breasts are bigger than her head but she’s still fun to watch.
-Yuuna is the supreme ruler of St. Michael’s.
-Patiently awaiting the next translation. Man, college’s 3rd period will start this Monday and I’ll be sad when that day comes.
Overall, another good Hanabira game fully experienced and understood.

    • afkeroge says:

Haha, good for you. For me, it was actually kind of deep. It doesn’t just go for showing the audience yuri, it shows yuri with depth. And that’s what I like about this series. :)

      • EmperorG says:

Of course I know it’s about Kaede’s self doubt that existed long before she could remember and how Sara wants to help Kaede become the prince whom she’s loved and idolized since childhood. A love that was somewhat formed by one who slowly remembered that her feelings for the other go much deeper than simply to defend her honor and make her happy. The feelings of the other began to grow due to the other always being there for her and being a role model to her. Both eventually realize that their feelings for each other have gone past the point of mere sisterhood a long time ago, it just needed to be reignited. As for the transformation, Sara miscalculated how well her plan would work. I liked that part.
In any case, before the debut of Mai X Reo, Kaede X Sara definitely made a better 1st impression than Yuuna X Nanami.

        • afkeroge says:

I agree with you on that. At first I thought the whole series was just a collection of typical yuri stories that you find in manga often, but Fuguriya seems to like to go above everyone’s expectations. I wish them success even after the bill of nightmare gets implemented.

          Power to Yuri!

    • Yi says:

Sara is super adorable. I love her a lot!! Kaede’s breasts are… a bit too large for my tastes, but she’s fabulous as well. Together, they make a really cute pair.

      Good luck with college.

Anyway, this game certainly has its depth and its character developments. It makes this much more interesting than simple lust fodder. Both girls have their drives that’s not just getting the other into bed. They also grow considerably throughout the game. And just as importantly, their love seems to have some reason; it doesn’t feel like just taking two random cute girls and forcing a story on them.

      • EmperorG says:

Another trait I forgot to mention that Sara has is her “ehehe”, which I’m assuming is her epic laugh. Why do girls have so many epic laughs? There are so few guys in anime that have epic laughs. I guess women have a distinct ability to laugh in a simple, yet glorious manner. Just look at Victorique in episode 2. I can’t stop pressing rewind. Indeed, Kaede’s breasts are a bit over exaggerated for someone her age but at least she’s lovable as well. Ironically, the large breasted look works incredibly well for Queen Yuuna, Countess Erisu Tepes and Professor Takako.
Episode 8 will hopefully be the next to be translated (I can’t help wanting to see the College Lords in English. Yup, they’re lords now instead of queens.)

        • AXYPB says:

You should hear Reo’s laugh. It’s the most unsettling of the entire cast.

        • Yi says:

Haha, yea. The distinct laughters make my day. Anyway, Erisu and Shizuku, although a bit older, are still high school students. Episode eight is pretty good though. I love the character designs the most.

  97. Johnny says:

Just finished it… So ecchi (69, the very last H-scene), cute (particulary Sara), eromantic (in my language, i’d say “cul et cucul”), emotional (when the poor little Sara cries above Kaede who becomes distant)… i could say a lot of another things, but it fully satisfies my pervert & sentimental selves at the same time !
    HANABIRA RULES !!!

    • Kirby Omega says:

I personally think the same, hanabira (not only in this game) evolved considerably, combining yuri, drama, comedy and hentai isn’t that easy, but fuguriya made it with excelency, It makes me feel sometimes that I am inside the game…being as the mind of the girl who makes decisions and understanding both girls feeling at the same time, almost turning it in part as an anime…simply excelent (sorry if my english is bad, I am argentinian and this is my first comment in this blog n.nU)

    • Yi says:

Agreed. It fully satisfied my ecchi and my sentimental sides and more. By the way, love “eromantic.” I’m going to start using it. ^ ^

@Kirby Omega: This one is a huge step up from the last one. Although the choices are limited and player interactions are weak, the script and story is done well enough that I, like you, also feel as if I am watching the events unfold as Kaede. Excellent indeed!
      p.s. Your English is fine. ^ ^
Welcome, and thank you so much for commenting. I’m always ecstatic to hear what readers have to say.

    • AXYPB says:

      That wasn’t the ending.

      • Swordwind says:

Axy’s right. You’ll have to try again, Johnny~

      • Johnny says:

I know the very last H scene is not the ending.
If i wasnt wrong, the very last scene is when Kaede comforts Sara (who’s afraid of losing the brand new Kaede) and the two of them share a sweet kiss).
And i know it, because in the extras, all the cases were complete (and i chose every top choice, particulary the last… unless being heartless, u cant refuse to kiss sweet little Sara !)

  98. xX777Xx says:

Just played a bit and totally love it xD (Only played till the scene where all of Kaede’s classmates knew who’s the girl that Sara kissed and stopped playing cause tests and well a bad habit of mine keeping good things for the last ^ ^;;). I love SaraxKaede as my number 1 fave pairing :3. MaixReo is the least fave pairing for me (my fave things usually not same with the publics fave I don’t know why. Sorry for MaixReo’s fans). I hope someday, there’s an English patch for the 4th game too >.< *cough cough* Ok… maybe not just the 4th game but all of the series of Hanabira xD. Sorry I know, I sounds greedy but can't resist it Hanabira is just too awesome x3. I agree with Kirby Omega, well I played Hanabira and LOL a lot and my brother think I'm crazy ^ ^;;. Btw, sorry for my bad English ._.

    • Yi says:

There’s a lot more yuri goodness to come for sure. You’ve saved some good stuff. ^ ^

I’m kind of glad to see that Sara x Kaede is really gaining a lot more popularity with this release. They were sort of on the low end of the couples before, but it’s good to see them being appreciated. It’s kind of surprising to hear that Mai x Reo is your least favorite. That pair is usually one of the most popular of the five. Well, we all have varying tastes, and Fuguriya sure knows how to satisfy our differences.

I feel the same way about the translations. Hopefully, one day, they’ll all be translated.

      p.s Your English is fine! ^ ^

      • AXYPB says:

“I’m kind of glad to see that Sara x Kaede is really gaining a lot more popularity with this release. They were sort of on the low end of the couples before, but it’s good to see them being appreciated.”
This is exactly what I hoped for. I’m surprised how many people admit that this couple is their favorite only after the patch was released. I was under the impression that they were the least popular.

        • EmperorG says:

The title of least popular couple currently goes to Ruuna X Takako, as far the Western fandom is concerned. I always thought that before the pacth, Sara and Kaede were 3rd or 4th place. Until the patch for episode 7 is released, we won’t know for sure what kind of impact it will have for the non Japanese speakers. We’ll just have to wait and see.

        • Yi says:

I think there was a poll on Hanabira-kun about the favorite pairings; maybe I should make a new one now that another story has been translated.

What’d be interesting though is seeing a poll of favorite pairings after all the games have been translated. I suspect things will change yet again with another release.

Anyway, while Kaede x Sara is not the overall favorite, I’d agree with EmperorG that Runa x Takako is the least well liked of them all. I guess Runa’s just a bit too loli for some.

        • xX777Xx says:

@AXYPB: To be honest I’ve liked Sara x Kaede as my number 1 fave pair when I knew about Sono Hanabira for the first time ;) (there’s only an English patch for the first game back then). I’m really happy when I saw the English patch for the second game x3. Thanks a lot for the hard work ^ ^.

@ Yi: I guess cause the age gap between Runa and Takako. If you count roughly, just think if Runa is in 6th grade or around 12 yrs old and for Takako a teacher at least 22 yrs old or so. Takako’s age is almost two times Runa’s age. Some people maybe don’t like it because Runa is just too young. Or well maybe some people see them like a mother and daughter? Who knows :P ?

        • Yi says:

Yea, the age difference is super controversial. It’s the first thing that jumped out at me too when the couple was first previewed. Now, a mother-daughter comparison is something I haven’t thought of before…

  99. Johnny says:

It seems to me Yuuna is not underage… but her appearance is really loli (even though her boobs are a little bigger than Reo’s ! :p).

  100. Johnny says:

    Yes i meant Runa. :p

  101. blapblap says:

Can I has a guide of the game x3? I’m kinda lazy to backtrack so it’d be nice if I can have the answers. ^^

    • Yi says:

I don’t think a guide is necessary. There are no alternative routes. Just pick the top choice for all the choices and you should be able to unlock all the CGs and scenes.

The visual novel is pretty ecchi, so I hope you can tolerate all those scenes! Have fun with the lovely yuri series~

  106. Mysterion says:

Just finished this second part of the series after playing through the first game last week. HUGE THANKS goes out to everyone who helped to work on the English translation patches. I’m also quite impressed with the job Fuguriya has done in these two visual novels. Though I can certainly understand how Sara and Kaede might seem more appealing in certain respects than Yuuna and Nanami, it’s difficult for me to say definitively which couple is better mostly because of how different these two relationships are (Sara basically admitted to as much during Yuuna’s cameo appearance). I really thought the first game was more about exploring the beginnings of a new, “love-at-first-sight” type of relationship between Nanami and Yuuna who had only just met, whereas the second game focuses more on a relationship that already had deep roots in the past that needed to be reawakened. As a result, it may appear that first game did not have the same amount of depth and emotion evoked in the second, but judged on its own merits, I thought that Nanami and Yuuna’s depiction in the first game was done quite well, with plenty of humorous and heartwarming moments that also illustrated the depth of their love for each other.

This is certainly not to say that I didn’t also enjoy this game immensely. I agree with pretty much everyone else so far that Sara is definitely the main draw for this game. She has a commanding presence that almost equals that of Yuuna (hooray for Yuuna fans!) despite her status as an underclassman and her late appearance. Also, anyone has to admire her persistence and determination in her pursuit of the love of her estranged cousin as well as her willingness to do just about anything just to please and be with Kaede, whose seemingly conflicted personality leads to some very heart-wrenching moments between the two. I don’t want to give anything away but I thought I was actually headed for a possible “bad ending” during one Kaede’s more desperate moments late in the game. As for Kaede, I actually didn’t really mind how her personality was initially portrayed, which allowed for a nice opportunity for deep character development throughout the game. I just wished that some of her outbursts, particularly during the climactic moment on the bed with a tearful but adorable Sara, were a little bit less restrained so as to underscore Kaede’s dramatic development at this particular moment. If the developers intended this game to be more emotional than the previous one, might as go all out in this decisive moment.

Overall, I enjoyed each game just as much as the other, but on different levels. This first was about discovery whereas the second was about rediscovery. On the one hand, I can’t wait to get started on Reo/Mai in “Joined in Love with You” but I seem to find myself putting it off for a while since it’s the last game in the series with an English translation patch as of now. Anyway, sorry for rambling on for so long… just wanted to share some of my thoughts.

    • AXYPB says:

I believe that Sara’s most defining characteristic is her impulsiveness, fueled largely by her resolution to win Kaede’s exclusive affection. On multiple occasions per visual novel, she makes significant choices on impulse thinking it’s what Kaede wants or is best for her, only to regret it immediately after: she pleasures her in the infirmary shortly after meeting her, only to break down in tears seconds later; she gives her a makeover and undoes it when Kaede starts getting too much attention; and she authorizes the publication of a telling photograph that ends the same way. Her spontaneous personality is directly at odds with Kaede’s apprehensiveness. Kaede, who takes care to be as uninvolved with others as possible, is forced by Sara’s presence and actions to change that, and Sara is taught restraint by Kaede’s example. Each of them possesses a crucial social component that the other lacks, and by providing that, their relationship grows.

When time permits, I will discuss their characters and how they affect their relationship in detailed studies on my blog. This was actually what I wanted the first posts on my blog to be about, but more important projects have put those plans on hold.

    • Yi says:

I agree with both of you . I feel Yuuna and Nanami gets a little underappreciated from the first game. To be fair, it was the first work of this series. Still, as you said, it’s a nice story about love at first sight and idol admiration. Yuuna makes it especially interesting.
Also, very good point on the humorous moments! This pair makes me laugh much more than all the others. Yuuna is just too cute with her devious ways. ^ ^

      About Watashi no Ouji-sama.
Sara is certainly one of the highlights of the visual novel for me. I love confident authoritative girls who knows what she wants and goes for it (like Yuuna and Runa). In fact, Sara is probably the most persistent and definitely the most proactive of all the girls about her love. She enrolls in St. Michael’s for Kaede. She even rapes her! So yea, the passion is definitely there.

The other thing I found really neat is in their developments is that the story is about how Sara inspires Kaede to be more confident in herself. And, when we find out that Kaede was also Sara’s inspiration as kids, we have a very beautiful parallel.

@Mysterion: By the way, the sixth Sono Hanabira explores them further, and I think you’d find it very interesting.

Thanks for visiting and for the in depth comments on your opinions!

  107. Nekoko says:

Did Sara, er, rape Kaede at the beginning of the VN?

    • AXYPB says:

Technically, she did. As with all potentially controversial issues in this series, the ramifications are never explored and any negative effects forgotten shortly after.

    • Yi says:

Yes she did! And somehow it’s OK and in fact, super hot, because 1. Kaede enjoys it and 2. they’re both girls.

We can get a sense of just how controversial and ridiculous this sort of story is if we imagine that today, Sara is Kaede’s male cousin, and the “enjoyment” is really just a physical reaction.

Rape is actually a fairly common plot in yuri, and rarely does it explore it further. (Stockholm syndrome with Kaede perhaps? j/k)

Yuri certainly gets away with a lot of things. Just check out Hoshikute Chuu.

      • Nekoko says:

Isn’t it also physical reaction with two girls? With actual girl-on-girl rape, not yuri rape.

        • Yi says:

It’s been a while, but I thought Kaede emotionally enjoyed it as well. I guess not. Either way, it’s still quite a controversial scene.

Probably because u chose 2 many wrong options… To see the whole game, u must restart it and choose every top choice… and don’t tell me the first u played it, u’ve chosen “Don’t Kiss” about the 3rd choice, u meanie !!

    • yunra says:

lmao is that so?! i thought whichever choices i made it wouldnt effect the storyline. thanks for the tip, i’m going to try it out now!

..and yes i did chose ‘Dont Kiss’ :P

  112. Johnny says:

    You heartless !
How could u reject a kiss of little cute Sara ?

    • yunra says:

aaahh forgive me, i just wanted to try something different :p or perhaps i just like to tease. by the way, it works ^^

    • AXYPB says:

“If I don’t harden my heart, I can’t refuse her.”

This is an attempt to assert some kind of authority over Sara, after successfully calming her down the night before. Kaede has resolved to do so and is in position to assert herself further at this juncture, but still isn’t fully psychologically prepared to deny Sara this request. Sara is still very much dependent on Kaede’s affection at this point in the story, as seen in the event immediately following this branch. Accordingly, Kaede actually gains more authority if she chooses to give Sara what she wants, albeit on her own terms.

      • yunra says:

took me awhile to process and understand your comment, and i find it agreeable. i guess i should have take into consideration Sara’s emotions more while playing, because since we’re playing from Kaede’s point of view, i couldnt help but be more…masochist, perhaps. lol

      • Yi says:

“Accordingly, Kaede actually gains more authority if she chooses to give Sara what she wants, albeit on her own terms.”
There is quite something to be said about this. The idea of power balance doesn’t necessarily lie in who gives in to the sexual requests, but instead on who depends on the other more.

It is actually something about your answers. Don’t be a meanie to Sara!! Make different choices and you should be able to reach the final scene. (As with the other games, you either got lucky or you just have better intuition. ^ ^)

p.s. I think making all the top choices lets you get to the last scene for this one.

Yi-san, I respect you and consider you a good person, but…could you please have a little less hatred towards introverted girls with lack of confidence, because i have these traits of personality and it seems that everyone here tends to hate this kind of peopleTT____TT That means, everyone including you would like this blog portal better without me. I think that despite all my admiration, I might start disliking you which I actually don`t want to happen though; ,((

    • Yi says:

My dear ThornsForest. Don’t worry. My frustration toward introverted girls with lack of confidence is merely that. Frustration, not hatred. Further, it applies mostly only to fiction too. I’d like to imagine I’m a very nice person in real life, and certainly to introverted girls. So, yea. ^ ^ Don’t take what I write about fictional characters too seriously, and don’t take it to mean I’ll dislike you personally.

      Cheers!

      • ThornsForest says:

I humbly apologize for this misunderstanding.
I just didn`t read the complete thread, and in yor later comments you assumed having nothing against shy and non-confident ones, so it might be I really just take everything written in the first posts too seriously.
However, you seem to leaving aside meganekkos, who are about as popular type as tsundere or otaku girl and the like. Personally I kind of liked tat sparkling-glasses, a bit maniacal side of Kaede, though she does look stunningly without glasses and with hair let down…
you know, I certainly have a thing for wavy long hair, but Erisu`s length is the best d(>__<)b

        • Yi says:

I am serious when I say I don’t like shy and non-confident types and Kaede when she’s assuming that personality. But you need to distinguish between feelings in abstract, in fiction, and in reality on a case-by-case basis.

Also, I don’t like meganekkos in anime usually (It really depends on the frame I guess)… Just a personal preference thing. So that’s another strike against Kaede I guess.

p.s. Agreed about Eris. She’s lovely!

    • Sari says:

I think the main problem people have with Kaede’s character stems from the fact that her awkwardness comes out of nowhere. There is no external impetus for her lack of confidence, her classmates adore her, she isn’t misanthropic, she isn’t really shy and can talk perfectly well with others. So why does she act this way when everything is kinda at odds with that? That’s a question you shouldn’t ask about a viewpoint character and I think that’s the main reason for people’s irritation, not those character traits by themselves. Well that and this awful Hollywood trope about the plain schoolgirl becoming beautiful by taking off her glasses and loosening her braid.

      • Yi says:

That’s very true. It’s her inner monologues I hate. It sounds so… whiny. She seems perfectly fine and confident and beloved by all, but her inner thoughts are rife with self-doubt. It’s almost as if she’s a spoiled brat who just isn’t quite satisfied with being an upper-middle class, popular, pretty, and successful student. She still needs something to complain about herself. That is the part I don’t like. She almost sounds like she’s fishing for compliments from the audience, because the story does little to explain her self-doubts. Great point Sari!!

      • AXYPB says:

To be frank, I find the recent general misunderstanding of Kaede’s character unsettling. As I am currently re-editing the script in preparation for a new release of the patch that will support the remake, I will attempt to explain the parts of her character that readers take issue with. Particularly, this criticism does not take into account the primary reason Kaede’s personality developed into what it is now: Sara’s departure.

True, the story does little to elaborate on why Kaede appears to seek approval from the reader for her interpretations of the events happening before her. She explains repeatedly that she is aware of her hatred for attention and is seemingly unable to do anything to correct it. This is due to the story’s failure to explore her childhood in greater detail. What is known is that when she and Sara were separated, their development diverged to the point that they have completely opposing personalities. Sara was able to find employment as a well-loved model thanks to her resolve to reunite in the future. Kaede’s primary calling during her childhood was Sara’s guardian, and it was suddenly removed with nothing to fill the gap left by Sara’s departure. She was devastated by this, but because she had her duties as class representative even then, she was made to focus on those. However, due to her natural talent for administration, the attention she got from others were those of demand pertinent to her position as representative, rather than true affection. She does not view herself as talented because she never had any opportunity to express them, so she sees her own strengths as mundane since she had naturally exercised them for many years to no great fanfare. Kaede sees herself as plain and untalented, but only because no one had told her otherwise in the time that such remarks could have left an impression on her.

Kaede gave her all for Sara when she was the only significant peer in her life, and naturally she feared the worst should she have failed to protect her. Again, she protected Sara out of her self-obligation as an older sister figure to her, not because she sought special recognition, yet she got it anyway from Sara without knowing it. Perhaps this is why Sara viewed Kaede as a prince: The defining moment for princes in fairy tales are saving damsels in distress. If the prince cannot do this, what good is he? He will not win the damsel’s hand in marriage, which is arguably the ultimate reward for the fairy tale prince. This noble sense of duty to others is encoded deep in Kaede’s personality, and not even the lack of a princess to rescue could diminish it.

As a class representative, she is under great pressure to act efficiently and not make any mistakes, and if she fails there, she will truly have nothing left. She lacks the drive to plan for her future because she is too attached to her position as class representative, and she is unable to see any career paths from those experiences. Recall in the beginning of My Dear Prince, Kaede remarks that she has been called “class rep” more often than her own name. Her fear of disappointing others exacerbated her unwillingness to expand her horizons; both are well-ingrained into her personality at this point. When Sara left, Kaede’s fear of failure remained, but the potential consequences of it did not. She fears rejection over all else, so she withdrew from society to avoid this completely, and this is reflected in her self-depreciating narrative. She knows it is bad for her future to fear attention from others, but no one has come close to her to rectify it. Only Sara is able to, being the one who knows Kaede most personally and the only one willing to approach her in the closest possible way, but Kaede’s fear of other people frustrates Sara’s attempts to come close. Kaede’s desire to rid herself of her negative mindset and her fear that someone will try are constantly at odds, and only a drastic and aggressive intervention from Sara was able to begin the healing process. Note that it is still ongoing, with time running out for both of them. A deep complex like this does not go away in such a short time as a few visual novels, so there is plenty of room to explore how this happens.

Note that the above is my own theory only. It does not take into account anything seen in Music Box of Memories (as it is non-canonical) or the light novel The Curtain Call Never Ends (as it is not translated). If time permits, I will expand on this on Petal’s Garden, starting with Sara’s idea to have Kaede debut as a model.

        • Yi says:

There you go, ThornsForest. A fellow Kaede lover to show that this place is not all cruel like me. ^ ^

Now, I don’t think Sari and I were particularly “misleading” although we do have a wildly different interpretations from you. Without repeating both our words, I’ll just say a quick note. I understand the reasoning for her more unassertive personality, but it feels forced to me. (And I assume to Sari as well.)

But yes, this relationship is far from fully fleshed out, and there are still source materials coming (and possibly released in the future) to address this.

As always, it’s lovely to hear from you, AXYPB, especially to present a different opinion for the readers.

        • AXYPB says:

It’s not my intention to change any minds, but I feel that providing an alternate interpretation that considers other facets of her background will help to better inform opinions of her character, be they favorable or not.

        • AXYPB says:

I have to make a correction on my analysis here. I wrote that Kaede was a class representative since her childhood, which is incorrect. I mistakenly associated her childhood friendship with Mai, also a class representative, with the time she first became a representative herself. She was first elected as class representative in her first year in senior high school.

        • Sari says:

A very interesting and thoughtful analysis but that’s really the main problem I have with Kaede, it’s mostly conjecture. There are some character traits you really don’t have to explain, like how Nanami tends to zone out or how Mai is going nuts over Reo, despite usually being calm and collected. But if you have someone with a less relateable defining attribute like Kaede and you follow them around as viewpoint characters for two novels, you really want to know what her deal is and why her own impression is so at odds with what we actually see. And they kinda dropped the ball in that respect, especially considering through how much more character development Kaede goes compared to every other viewpoint character except possibly Shizuku.

Now I’m not calling out Fuguriya over this, it was their second entry and Nanami is a far less complicated character. I’m just providing a reason why people feel Kaede’s character comes across as forced and was thus less well received.

        • AXYPB says:

I don’t disagree with your assessment, but for me, it’s exactly those uncertainties that lead me to invest so much interest in her character.

  128. ThornsForest says:

Well you know, it is really disgusting how Westerns hate awkward people. Japanese just adore the klutzes, calling them “dojikko” and by the way, despite being in a European country, I have a rather Eastern mentality so I would also prefer dojikko character, I think it`s very moe, and so are the glasses. I know that people have all different tastes, but many Japanese tend to have a glasses fetish{well, personally mine are long hair and also gothic lolita} however, there`s nobody to everyone`s liking and to fit all tastes, so…
P.S. I also was serious about starting to hate all the people here, because sometimes they`re simply cruel.

    • Yi says:

Hm… I don’t think one can make a generalization on that. “Westerns” don’t hate awkward people. And on another note, dojikko is charming, but usually only in anime. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone adoring a waitress who spilled wine on super expensive dress. Or getting turned on after seeing someone crash a car into a person. That’s the difference between anime and real life.

On another note, I’m not sure what to say, but yea… Fiction, especially anime, has its own tropes that do not necessarily have direct correlation to real life. And there’s a world of difference between saying something like, “I don’t like quiet people” and “I don’t like so-and-so.” This is actually an issue a lot of people seem to not understand: the relationship between generalizations and specific cases (as well as the use of them in rhetoric, which is another related topic).

If you want to take preferences for tropes personally, and somehow think people’s dislike for Kaede is personally offending you or directed at you, I would think that’s unfair. But that’s just me. And you know, I’m cruel and stuff I guess. Also, not everyone here dislikes Kaede… Probably just me along with a handful.

      Cheers darling. ♥

  129. ThornsForest says:

Sumimasen, I simply take anime and other media as a reflection of real life and, of course, personalities and characters in media as a reflection of real existing people, because there isn`t smoke without fire and there isn`t fiction without life.
I agree though, Sonohana is a bit of fantasy way of expressing life; it might be too idealistic and fluffy and show even flaws and weaknesses through pink glasses and all, I mean, I wouldn`t really fall for a girl like Mai – she`s too self-centered – or like Yuuna, who just does as she pleases and acts like a spoiled ojou-sama, or Runa – she`s incredibly bossy and takes everyone as her slaves, just thinking that she`s allowed to do anything and act immoral, even claim a teacher, an adult, her property… Well, nobody`s perfect in the world, I myself have many flaws, for example, I really lack ability to communicate with people normally and always fear they may hate me, and also I look for someone whose interests match mine entirely, although it`s impossible…
But still, I`ve always thought that anime shows interaction between people with really existent personalities and shows a model of society in scale of several heroes of a certain story.
If it`s completely the other way round, well, is there a reason to watch, read, or play those stories, then?

    • Yi says:

“Sumimasen, I simply take anime and other media as a reflection of real life and, of course, personalities and characters in media as a reflection of real existing people, because there isn`t smoke without fire and there isn`t fiction without life.”

True, they are based in reality, but there’s a degree of difference that I personally think people should understand. If you are going to take how someone feels about a certain fiction character to mean how someone feels about any real person, you might be forgetting that these fictional characters are, in the end, only so limited, whereas a real person is infinitely more complex. But whatever. Feel free to boil any real person down to a set of description, and feel free to assume how others feel about real people because of their feelings for that set of descriptions.

If I were to do the same thing, I would assume YOU MUST HATE ME, because like Mai and Yuuna and Runa, I’m kind of self-centered. But I don’t think you hate me… Or I hope not. ^ ^

“But still, I`ve always thought that anime shows interaction between people with really existent personalities and shows a model of society in scale of several heroes of a certain story.
If it`s completely the other way round, well, is there a reason to watch, read, or play those stories, then?”

It is not completely the other way around, nor does anime show perfectly the interaction between people. It’s not all or nothing. Fiction emulates reality, but has its own twists and shades. It’s important to recognize when fiction deviates from reality. Certainly, for something like Sono Hanabira, a visual novel that runs for at most, 2 hours, it’s emulation of reality is not going to fully capture people’s personalities.

Anyway, to make it short, I don’t hate you, even if I do hate Kaede (and I actually don’t hate Kaede either…) Love you, hun. ^ ^

      • ThornsForest says:

fictional characters are, in the end, only so limited, whereas a real person is infinitely more complex.
I wouldn`t be so sure about this after AXYPB gave such a broad and deep psychoanalysis of one certain limited fictional character like of a complex living person, though…
Despite the novel being only several hours long, such an exploration of human mind and
        heart is impressive.
And, by all means, of course I don`t hate you!
Would someone who is oneself a bit selfish blame another one for the same weakness? I`m not that childish))
It`s just that our interests mismatched in some tiny criterium, and so I`ve thought that it would lead to arguements. In spite of this, I still have what to discuss with you, even if it`s not any subject in this world, I guess…

        P.S. Love you, hun
do you really favour all the people you`ve written this or it`s just politeness? A mere interest of mine, nothing offensive in particular meant by this question/

        • AXYPB says:

On the contrary, Kaede’s character is far from limited. Of the Sonohana characters, she experiences the most drastic changes in personality.

Kaede also gets some criticism for her physical appearance, particularly her bust size, the second largest of the entire cast. This was a deliberate decision to highlight a contrast between her personality and the impression she gives other, which is meant to compliment Sara’s. Sara is of moderate proportions and is the picture of youth; energetic, shapely, and fashionable, an ideal teenage idol. However, these qualities belie her overdependence on a guardian like Kaede, despite the great strides she made toward independence.

Kaede is, by contrast, rather mature in appearance; tall, well endowed, and austere in personality and attire, a model of an ideal woman. It is little wonder that she was declared the winner of the fourth SHK Election, to determine the most popular candidate for a bride. However, despite these enviable qualities, she is lacking in mature qualities with her admitted self-loathing and introversion.

Sara and Kaede envy each other in differing ways. Sara believes that Kaede could surpass her as a model with her statuesque figure, and Kaede wants to be more sociable like Sara. They each possess these complimentary characteristics in extreme quantities. These desires form one part of the foundation of their relationship.

        • Yi says:

@AXYPB and Thornsforest: I say limited in the context of fiction versus reality. So Kaede is limited in comparison to real life and among all fiction. She is a fascinating character and we can have multiple interpretations about her, but I hesitate to say she’s not limited when we put her next to, say, Dostoyevsky’s Raskolnikov. That’s where I think fiction as a great reflection for reality warrants much more merit.

“do you really favour all the people you`ve written this or it`s just politeness? A mere interest of mine, nothing offensive in particular meant by this question/”

I mean it for most cases. ^ ^

        • AXYPB says:

When I said she is far from limited, I meant it in relation to the other characters. I noticed that several recent comments were focused on her perceived flaws and attempted to give them context.

        • Yi says:

Oh, I thought your comment was in response to mine. I thought you were using Kaede’s relatively deep background within the Sonohana-verse to respond to my earlier claim about Kaede’s position in all fiction. I misunderstood. ^ ^

p.s. I agree. Kaede’s definitely one of the more fascinating characters, especially, compared to, say, Mai or Nanami.

    • Sari says:

“I felt extremely happy to know that I was able to make Reo feel such pleasure [...] I am a complete slave of her’s.” – Someone who is obviously too self-centered.

    • Yi says:

Hm… That’s an odd problem. Perhaps, try adjusting screen resolution to see if you can drag it back? Or re-download it? I have not heard of this before. Good luck!

  132. ThornsForest says:

Seems that Dostoyevsky and his masterpiece are really famous all over the world, that`s fairly impressive…it`s just that Russia is next door to my country and I never particularly realized that Slavic novelists can be read and favoured wolldwide.
About that comparison, Yi-san, it really depends on the volume and, of course, on the author`s purpose, how deeply the characters are depicted.
Just compare the entire novel with hundreds of pages, planned as a social, human psychology investigation and exploration, and a short game of mere several hours-length, with a linear plot, which was planned for entertainment, not for wide analysis.

    • Yi says:

My point is merely that a work like Sono Hanabira (and most anime) has neither the depth or the length to be taken as a literal reflection of real personalities. It relies heavily on tropes that are rarely seen in real life.

“a short game of mere several hours-length, with a linear plot, which was planned for entertainment, not for wide analysis.”

Exactly. So it seems silly to assume that I hate certain people based solely on my dislike for a character from this short game, doesn’t it?

  133. ThornsForest says:

“most anime has neither the depth or the length to be taken as a literal reflection of real personalities”

well, if to speak about stereotypical “one-stupid-guy-and-harem-of-girls” type of series, they truly don`t depict real personality, the same goes for “slice-of-life-comedy-about-four-schoolgirls” type, which often don`t have an exact plot development.
However, there are also numerous works which dwell upon the most complicated social and human psychology and interaction problems, reflecting in-depth individual psychological portrait of each character. Such works a EVA, or films by Makoto Shinkai, or Higurashi, or Black Rock Shooter TV-2012, or Puella Magi Madoka Magica… well, they all are fantasy, but depict human minds and souls more realistic than any slice of life anime, because the characters are put into situations where they are forced to show their most outstanding qualities, weaknesses as well as strong points in their personalities.
That ability of the Japanese to gaze inside the sub-consciousness, to the very soul of the heroes in their stories, was what actually drew me to prefer anime over all the other kinds of animation – it counts on grown people who can think, not on kids who just consume what they see or hear.
Otherwise, those stories wouldn`t have cause such volume of discussion.

“It relies heavily on tropes that are rarely seen in real life.”
Please forgive my rudeness, but are introverted people, or the shy, or the unconfident, or the spoiled, or the selfish, really that rare?!
Or maybe you could say that you never met infantile adults, or too-early matured adolescents?
Or you have never communicated with people who act thorhy and rude on the outside, but actually are hiding ther fragile and tender inner selves?
Or there are no bullies and teasers who always act provocative and energetic so that nobody will see their actual sadness?
All the tropes are just a mirror of what we have in our everyday life, but don`t pay much attention to.

    • Yi says:

I’m talking about “literal” reflections/ interpretations of characters, because this whole discussion hinges upon your taking my feelings about a character as a direct indication of my feelings about real people. Yes, there are a lot of anime that rely on more than tropes. Yes, there are many anime that have reflect reality. But no, there are not a lot of anime whose characters are literally reflections—not parodies and not exaggerations—of real people.

You are straying the discussion away from my original point, which is not about whether anime can produce fascinating stories and characters. I keep an anime blog because I do agree that it can. However, I do not think it’s fair to take all anime characters to be good reflections of reality, and even less so, take their portrayals literally, as you seemed to have done with my distaste for one character of a short work.

And no, introverted people, or the shy, or the unconfident, or the spoiled, or the selfish, infantile adults, or too-early matured adolescents are not that rare. And neither are people who act thorhy and rude on the outside, but actually are hiding ther fragile and tender inner selves. Tsunderes so to speak. But what is rare is someone who acts thorny and rude, and then blush easily and visibly and yell “baka” all over the place. I can dislike a character and a trope because it is terrible attempt to mirror real personalities. I can also dislike the way anime tends to portray shy characters and still limit that dislike to anime, because the differences between a trope and real life are huge.

I almost feel like you’re missing my point in all these comments… My original point is simply this. You should not assume how I feel about real life people based on how I feel about a certain trope in a certain fiction. And the reasons are thus:

First, fiction is not reality. Second, as much as fiction attempts to mirror/ reflect reality, there are shades of differences. (An aside, that there are shades of differences do not make fiction obsolete or pointless. I never claimed that.) Third, these differences can influence my feelings about characters in fiction unrelated to my feelings for people in real life. Fourth, tropes are not literal reflections or precise mirrors of real life; rather, they are simplified, and often (again not always) distorted or exaggerated, versions of personalities. Fifth, it follows then that I can dislike a trope without disliking the reality that it’s based on if I don’t like how it was distorted. Sixth, certain works rely on certain tropes too much to be accurate reflections. (That does not mean they can’t be interesting or that there aren’t other fictions that successfully, sharply portray reality). Seventh, the characters in these works then might not be people I enjoy. Eighth, Kaede in Sono Hanabira fits this: Kaede is a character from a minor work that has not fully fleshed out everything, and is far from a real character. Ninth, and this is important, that I spoke out against a specific character has no bearing on my thoughts on all anime. Tenth, to say that most anime have little depth is not the same thing as saying all anime have little depth.

And finally… Please, I have to stress once again not to generalize and assume universal truths from a specific case. It’s not all or nothing.

      • ThornsForest says:

Well, this is most certainly the point — my youth maximalism or call it whatever you wish — for me, it`s black or white, and I often leave behind the shades of gray.
Anyway, that`s quite a discussion we`ve blown out of a single phrase of yours, merely
the statement about your distaste of a certain trope…We`ve been debating subjects deviated from the original point, even reached the topic of all Japanese media in general…you`re right.
But somewhere in your post, in my opinion, you`re slightly contradicting your own words, for example that you never claimed the pointlessness of fiction, even though several sentences later you stated Kaede being far from a real person, despite that kind of personality existing in the real world, and not only in Japan, as I can say, but even in my area.
However, people are truly different in all parts of Earth – there is a special trait of every nation called mentality, and this includes a definite set of character traits, certain personality types which are most often seen in this certain country. Probably, it`s just that in Japan, there are plenty of those like Kaede, or like Sara, or whoever from any other fandom, but the portrayals of them might get simplified or some parts might be emphasized so as to draw more audience interest or cover up their flaws etc.
Considering that, one can find a fringe between fiction and reality, and I of course don`t mix them up too.Maybe I`m just too stubborn to admit not getting it all right and looking at the point of discussion from an immature angle. Sorry, I am one of those born in 1990`s, so you might take me as a youngster, although I don`t think you`re older than mid-twenties.

        • Yi says:

“you never claimed the pointlessness of fiction, even though several sentences later you stated Kaede being far from a real person, despite that kind of personality existing in the real world, and not only in Japan, as I can say, but even in my area.”

This is exactly what I’m talking about your generalizing of my words. There is no contradiction here at all, because Kaede does not equal all fiction. (If it does, we live in a terrible, artless world.) I can think that Kaede is far from a real person without thinking all characters from all fictions are.

And yes, Kaede is far from a real person. Having elements of real personalities do not automatically make her three-dimensional. Consider this example, a ten-year-old wrote a terrible fictional story. In it, he has a human character. Now, just because that character has elements similar to a real person—two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and a brain… maybe he is even smart—should I now all of a sudden consider that person to be a model reflection of a real person, because there are people in this world who really is smart? And, if I were to criticize that character, does that mean I find all fictions to be bad? Of course not.

Sono Hanabira has good writing and has fascinating characters. But relative to the context of this discussion, this series does not have the depth for anyone to assume my feelings for real people based on my feelings for this series.

“the portrayals of them might get simplified or some parts might be emphasized so as to draw more audience interest or cover up their flaws etc.”

Yes, and when it’s simplified too much, they become two-dimensional caricatures.

          “although I don`t think you`re older than mid-twenties.”

Yea, I’m in my mid-twenties, which makes me still pretty young (I hope)…

  134. ThornsForest says:

AGAIN THAT DAMN DIDN`T WORK, SORRY I DON`T KNOW HOW TO USE THIS!

  135. ThornsForest says:

Pretty young, which doesn`t get in your way of looking at us as at children though…you remind me of someone on the forum of some random anime site in my area. She is twenty-five, but percieves everyone who`s under twenty as a little silly child who, poor thing, doesn`t know anything about life yet…as if she was as wise and experienced as an old hag. It`s a little unfair, i think, because the age difference isn`t really that big….sorry, no offence, you are definitely not at the same rate as her, but I wonder if all the girls are gonna be like that when they reach this age.
Anyway, if to think about generalization – yes, Sonohana is a drop in an ocean of all games, manga and anime, and there are myriads of other fandoms, and many of them are a lot wider and deeper and, actually, better than this particular novel, and the characters are portrayed more thoroughly in plenty of other fiction, but… This point of your view. That if she has two eyes, four limbs, two ears it doesn`t make her a model of a person. Sorry to disappoint you, but she also has feelings, and those feelings are complicated and look natural, and that makes her something more than just a 2D-doll of a human. Regardless of how to look at her, she doesn`t indicate your treating real people, though. That`s what I`ve already learnt from your reasonable arguments. However, there`s still something I disagree with – your consideration this type of fiction, I am speaking now of a certain game, not of everything, unable to depict a character as lively as an existent person. Who really ARE caricatures on people, that`s Mai and Reo, and this doesnn`t get in people`s way of liking them over all the other couples. My favourite is any besides those two , on the contrary, it`s Erisu and Shizuku, who seem the closest to people who can be seen around in real life.

Now I think you’re being unfair. In our discussion so far, I have never once discredited your points because of your age. Rather, I disagree with you because we see differently on the points. I have also never said on here that your points are not valid because you’re younger than me. In fact, I don’t even know what age you are, and I did not know you were younger than me before this comment.

Now, if you’re referring to my tweets, it was actually about my dating life. From my own experience, the maturity levels between a high school student and a college graduate really are noticeable. e.g. What we’re looking for in a relationship and how we go about having a relationship.

” However, there`s still something I disagree with – your consideration this type of fiction, I am speaking now of a certain game, not of everything, unable to depict a character as lively as an existent person.”

Just one last note, I think the potential is there for visual novels, and I have seen visual novels with amazing characterization. Saya no Uta, for example, has a distorted sense of humanity that reflects the gray sides of human morality. So it’s not about all the works in this type of fiction/medium. It’s just this, Sono Hanabira 2.

The rest of your comment, I agree with. :)

Yi-san..I wonder how much of a kind person you are.
Anyone else would have already screamed something like “You`re annoying! Get out of here, you never change your darn point of view and just go on proving something that`s complete nonsence, I`m tired of arguing with a stubborn brat like you” – sorta this.
So thank you four your great patience, seriously, domo arigatou gozaimashita.
And about that…well, we who are entering universities
*btw, I`m gonna study foreign languages and my last exam will be on wednesday – it`s English, to speak of*
are at a slightly different stage of development from those who`ve already graduated, I mean the angle which we are looking at everything from.
By everything, it`s meant life, as well as relationship – many of us haven`t really dated anyone yet…well, that`s a lie. I`m one of the minority who haven`t ever gone out with anybody, personally I don`t know much about love.
I`ve had only one-sided crushes till now, and that`s no wonder cause they were girls and I couldn`t just go ahead and confess…and no wonder that nobody has ever asked me out, cause I`ve never shown any interest in anything besides studying or music or all besides communicating with people.
I`m not easy-going, you could even call me cold and unemotional, not sociable and sometimes rude. So I have probably less life experience than most youth at my age, I have one best friend from childhood until now – like a sister – and nobody else to talk to.
Well, it`s undoubtedly going to change when I start attending a university I`ve chosen – there will be plenty of new people, and of course, on the speciality of foreign languages, there are lots of girls… and some of them might even be okay with that. But I`m just not someone who deserves love, I`m sure nobody has ever liked me that way, the only way to change it and to find a dear person is most certainly to change myself, turn that hard-to-deal-with attitude into something more socially acceptable, I think.
Sorry for that sudden revelation I made out of the blue, I know you`re a stranger and stuff, but…it all was told for the sake of proving that I am not actually very savvy about life, personalities and interactions between people from anything besides fiction, so that is definitely the reason why I take all the models of social interactions and characters presented in fiction, for example, in tons of manga I`ve read, too seriously.

    • Yi says:

Oh Thornsforest, I’m really not that kind of a person, as I’m sure you’re finding out about now. I’m narcissistic, selfish, and inconsiderate at times. I’m also pretty mean with words and attitude. How people put up with me surprises me sometimes. Still, thank you for the compliment. ^ ^ It means a lot!

Anyways, hope your exam on Wednesday went splendidly. :)

As for our talk on life and relationships, I guess I’m not exactly in a position to give advice about it, as my own love life is full of issues here and there. And we each all have our ways of dealing with them. So I try to limit my opinions (and my tweets) to my experiences only, though that does not always happen. In any case, I can offer little besides encouragement. There’s no rush in getting into a relationship or into dating. We all go through life at our own pace, and sometimes, these things take time. Work on improving yourself and being the best person you can be. The right moment will come. I’m sure of it. ^ ^

“But I`m just not someone who deserves love, I`m sure nobody has ever liked me that way, the only way to change it and to find a dear person is most certainly to change myself, turn that hard-to-deal-with attitude into something more socially acceptable, I think.”

I don’t think this is true. You sound like a wonderful, passionate person. Once you start expanding much more beyond high school, you’ll meet all kinds of other wonderful passionate people. And maybe click with someone. As you said, you will meet new people, have new experiences in university. When that’s done, you’ll be in another stage of life and meet others as well. You more than deserve love, and someone will come along and realize that.

Good luck with everything, Thornsforest. Cheers! ♥

    where Are you Yi-san?
    a week has already passed

    • Yi says:

My apologies, sweetie. I’ve been pretty busy with enjoying summer, and kind of just took a week off (plus responding to comments and making updates elsewhere on this blog). I’ll reply to everything soon. In the mean time, may I suggest/ urge you to check out some of my other more recent and active posts?

And thanks for the continued support! Love ya. ^ ^

  138. ThornsForest says:

and what about reading and replying my previous post

    • Yi says:

As I said above, “I’ll reply to everything soon.”

I still have emails in my inbox that I need to address from over a month ago, as well as comments way older than yours. I’m slowly wading through them. I always get to everything though, eventually. ^ ^

Lately, I’ve been preoccupied with more time-sensitive stuff (i.e. things with a deadline). And I also do things on whims as well as have my need for personal/alone time… So…

  139. Anna says:

    DAMN!
I was expecting to download this as a FULL game than a sample! >:(

    • Yi says:

… This is the full game… There is no need to be angry.

      • Anito says:

Sorry, I just played the first part. The Nanami X Yuuna, its not the full game, it ended on the bath scene. I hoped so much to play it through the end :(
But thanks for informing me that this part is full…at least theres some hope to see the ending. Oh by the way, would you mind sharing what parts are full and what parts are not?

        • Yi says:

The game is the full game. You made some unfortunate choices, so you didn’t get to unlock the last scene. Replay it and make the right choices.

        • Anito says:

You said on the review/impressions that the games choices wont affect the single ending :(
Either way, thanks for informing me of my ignorance, I will play it again then

        • Sari says:

Well, Yi was correct, it doesn’t affect the ending. You just don’t get to it.

        • DS says:

hmm…maybe I the downloading was not complete. I downloaded the game while experiencing a bad internet connection.
Alright, I will try a redownload

        • Yi says:

If you were able to play it at all, the download is fine. If you are simply the last CG’s and the last scene, you made the wrong choices, and there is no need to re-download.

        • DS says:

Alirght, I will just play it again. I hope I can get the last scenes this time. *sigh* what a bummer, I do not even remember my choices

        • Yi says:

Pick all top choices and use the skip button.

Or if it’s that much of a bummer, you don’t have to do it… It’s just a short visual novel.

  142. Karu says:

The download link with Mediafire is down, would anybody help and send a new download link? I had all the Sono Hanabira games that were available downloaded, but sadly, I had to get a new hard drive because my old one crashed and all my data was erased. So installing new stuff with the download links missing, or having errors is frustrating…

  143. anki says:

i have a question do i have to download something extra to play it ?? it opened with winzip o.ó?!
now i can open the pictures but,… they are nice but … :/

  144. ivan says:

can any1 give me the site of the english patch or chinese patch? i can’t find it :/

    • Yi says:

The site on which the English patch is hosted is currently down. Please give it a few days.

As for the Chinese patch, it’s in the comments. Scroll a bit and read. ^ ^

  145. shaffy says:

Where could I download the ENGLISH TRANSLATION? D; hohoho

  146. IgnikaMarcus says:

I seem to have a bit of a problem. I downloaded #2 but it won’t open for me. Not event the setup will open.

    • Yi says:

Hm… That’s odd. It works for me. Just extract the file, and double click the play file (no need for setup). If it that doesn’t work, try making a new folder and dragging all the extracted files from the old one into the new one. Hope this helps.
